Nejen Izraelci, i my máme máslo na hlavě s podporou režimů potlačující základní lidská práva. A strategie je: zapírat, zapírat, zapírat, případně zamaskovat za boj s terorismem. #kybez #Myanmar

Myanmar earthquake: My first MapAction field deployment

I haven’t posted for a few weeks because I went to Myanmar to help after the earthquake struck. MapAction sent me and my team leader to join the team from UNDAC (United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination). Our goal was to produce maps and information for the humanitarian response, specifically: search and rescue, needs assessment, and distribution of aid.

The country was in disarray after the earthquake, and has a sensitive political situation (a mild term for civil war), and these factors sometimes limited what we could do. It took a long time to get in, and to travel from the old capital of Yangon to the new one, Naypyidaw. However, even before we arrived in the field, we were working manically to prepare daily maps for the assessment teams.

On this platform I mostly share trip reports and personal projects. I wasn’t in Myanmar to explore, but managed to observe a few aspects of the country and its rich culture while in transit, shown here: local clothes (longyi) and skincare (thanaka root paste), tropical scenery, and splendid pagodas. We were based in Naypyidaw, a surreal garden fortress, but sombreness was banished from the empty, cracked corridors was by the camraderie of our team and the welcome of the local people.

For these people, the recovery will continue for many months, and MapAction will continue to help. Please continue donating to them at https://cafdonate.cafonline.org/5803#!/DonationDetails, or to another related cause.

Today in Labor History April 23, 2019: The Hpakant jade mine collapsed in Myanmar, killing four miners and two rescuers. Hpakant is the largest jade mine on Earth. Jade pickers are often migrants from other parts of the country. They live in dilapidated shacks and work as “freelancers,” scavenging through the tailings for small pieces of jade. On July 2, 2020, a landslide at the mine killed 174 miners. The landslide was the worst mining disaster in the nation’s history. The value of Myanmar’s jade industry is over $30 billion per year.
