🎸💔 TV In The Radio: My So-Called Life Theme – W.G. Snuffy Walden 💔🎸

W.G. Snuffy Walden’s introspective guitar theme for My So-Called Life perfectly encapsulated the raw emotion and teenage angst of Angela Chase’s world. Known for his work on thirtysomething and The West Wing, Walden created a hauntingly simple melody that felt like a diary entry set to music, making it a time capsule of ’90s adolescence.

Winnie Holzman is the co-creator of "Wicked." She's also behind another great portrait of female adolescence: "My So-Called Life," which ran for just 19 episodes in 1994/1995. Here's an interview with Holzman for the BBC's "Culture Shifters" series, where she discusses casting Claire Danes, how her age (she was just 14) allowed the rest of the ensemble to shine, and her feelings about the cancelation. "The knowledge that you put something out there that helped people feel less alone, and maybe a little uplifted, or seen is more important than how many episodes we got to make," she says, adding that producer Marshall Herskovitz calls it the James Dean of TV series. "I thought there was something true about that. It died young, but it made a big impact."

BBC · 'It was the James Dean of TV series': Writer Winnie Holzman on her pioneering teen show My So-Called LifeBy Natasha Tripney

Of all the 1990s teen shows in all the world, one reigns supreme: "My So-Called Life." It ran for a single season in 1994-95, gave Claire Danes her first Golden Globe, and introduced thousands of girls — and their parents' bath towels — to cherry-red hair dye. Show creator Ed Zwick has just written a memoir, "Hits, Flops and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood." Here's an extract, reproduced in MovieMaker magazine, about the development, casting, and cancelation of the iconic '90s show.

#MySoCalledLife re-watch - ep.4 is all about father-daughter relationships and it really hit me in the feels. I appreciate that you also her parents' perspectives. I think it helped me have empathy for my parents at an age when that is not easy.

"You have to let her push you away and not punish her for it. All she's doing is pushing you off your pedestal and she's right to do that. She has to do it. She's right on schedule.

She's not a thousand years late. Like I am." 😭

Watching #MySoCalledLife for the first time since high school. This show meant so much to me in high school and I was worried it would be very cringe. Only on ep.1 but so far it's all delightful nostalgia and the writing is actually good.

"I cannot bring myself to eat a well balanced meal in front of my mother. It just means too much to her." 😂

I identified so much with the main character when I was a teenager.
