Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: I love Richard Thompson, and some of his best work is when he's singing of heartbreak and love gone wrong. Here's a catchy song when a relationship doesn't live up to his partner's high-sounding words...</p><p>"She Said It Was Destiny," performed by Richard Thompson.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qVlJ_0-LSY" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=8qVlJ_0-LS</span><span class="invisible">Y</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/RichardThompson" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RichardThompson</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/FolkRock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FolkRock</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Disappointment" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Disappointment</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Now for something a little eccentric....here's some Handel pieces that were composed especially for automatic musical devices. They're sweet pieces, not complicated and with limited ranges, but pleasant. Makes me think of how Thomas Dolby made money for a while composing ringtones....</p><p>"Six Pieces for a Musical Organ Clock," composed by George Frideric Handel, performed by Tibor Pintor.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uvGDFZN3SoA" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=uvGDFZN3So</span><span class="invisible">A</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ClassicalMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClassicalMusic</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicForAutomata" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicForAutomata</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Handel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Handel</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Baroque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Baroque</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OrganMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OrganMusic</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Jake Blount's recent CD is a fascinating concept album about the religious practices of a group of Black climate refugees after a series of future environmental disasters. Yup, this is Afrofuturist music, although not utopian. Blount is a great performer; I've seen him live a number of times.</p><p>"Didn't It Rain," performed by Jake Blount. </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbFwHDx3wXQ" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=fbFwHDx3wX</span><span class="invisible">Q</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/JakeBlount" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JakeBlount</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/FolkRock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FolkRock</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Afrofuturism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Afrofuturism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Environmentalism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Environmentalism</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Harry Warren was a composer and songwriter whose songs are part of the American fabric..."Lullaby of Broadway," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "At Last," "Jeepers Creepers," and so many others, and it's a damn shame his name isn't invoked with people like Cole Porter and Irving Berlin. Here's a lesser-known song from his catalogue...</p><p>"My Heart Tells Me," performed by Susannah McCorkle.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBxnFPHd7PY" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=iBxnFPHd7P</span><span class="invisible">Y</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HarryWarren" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HarryWarren</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/SusannahMcCorkle" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SusannahMcCorkle</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NeglectedClassic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NeglectedClassic</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Listened to some more baroque today. This is a very popular piece, for understandable reasons. The idea of music meant to be played through fireworks seems odd, but I'm told that the big sounds of fireworks are actually engineered, and they can be made more quiet if the manufacturers wanted to...</p><p>"Royal Fireworks Music," composed by George Frideric Handel, performed by The English Concert.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkttBYzD-jY" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=EkttBYzD-j</span><span class="invisible">Y</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Baroque" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Baroque</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Handel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Handel</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Fireworks" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Fireworks</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Here's a local (to me) band that does some really fun stuff. They're very much a retro "hot jazz" group, and I find their music infectious. BTW, "Mobtown" is a nickname for Baltimore, thanks to some severe 19th century riots.</p><p>"Mobtown Strutter's Ball," performed by Tongue In Cheek.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABamBeg_Zw8" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=ABamBeg_Zw</span><span class="invisible">8</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/TongueInCheek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>TongueInCheek</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HotJazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HotJazz</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Baltimore" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Baltimore</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/DarktownStruttersBall" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DarktownStruttersBall</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Long ago, here in Baltimore we had a charming Irish band called Celtic Thunder. They disbanded in the 90s and the name has since been appropriated by what I regard as an overly-slick stadium-oriented band that I just disdain. But the OLD Celtic Thunder was lovely stuff, good down-n-dirty folk that you'd hear at the local pub. Here's a lovely track.</p><p>"Oft in the Stilly Night," performed by Celtic Thunder.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9I34Mxiu2Jg" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=9I34Mxiu2J</span><span class="invisible">g</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CelticThunder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CelticThunder</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NotTHATCelticThunder" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NotTHATCelticThunder</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Folk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Folk</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/IrishMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IrishMusic</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Every so often I listen to an opera. One of my faves is "The Jewels of the Madonna," by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, which centers on a group of Camorra outlaws in Naples, and was controversial (even now) for a semi-incestuous love story between a man and his adopted sister, implied criticism of the Catholic church, sacrilegious acts performed by the characters, and best of all, an on-stage orgy. Hey, who says opera is staid and stodgy?</p><p>Anyway, here's a lovely piece that played between acts...</p><p>"Intermezzo, from I gioielli della Madonna," composed by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_B7Iavkuhs" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=x_B7Iavkuh</span><span class="invisible">s</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/classicalmusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>classicalmusic</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Opera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Opera</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ErmannoWolfFerrari" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ErmannoWolfFerrari</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/JewelsOfTheMadonna" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>JewelsOfTheMadonna</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Intermezzo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Intermezzo</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: Roberta Flack left us today, and will be sorely missed. So many of her songs seem like cliches now, like "Killing Me Softly" or "Tonight I Celebrate My Love". Here's a rare track, never released on CD or streaming, taken from a 1971 Independence Day celebration in Ghana that also included the Ike &amp; Tina Turner and the Staples Singers. It's a gorgeous a cappella performance, and still relevant in this turbulent times.</p><p>"Freedom Song," performed by Roberta Flack.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDP3fST_vjM" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=nDP3fST_vj</span><span class="invisible">M</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/RobertaFlack" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RobertaFlack</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/FreedomSong" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FreedomSong</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Freedom" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Freedom</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/InMemoriam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>InMemoriam</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: In 1960, the film LET NO MAN WRITE MY EPITAPH was released. Not the greatest, but the cast included Shelly Winters, Burl Ives, James Darren, Jean Seberg...and Ella Fitzgerald. In a small role as a heroin-addicted lounge singer, Fitzgerald is actually decent, but one gets the sense she wasn't entirely comfortable being an actress.</p><p>Anyway, she released an album of songs from the movie that is now regarded as her best work, bar none. With just her voice and a solo piano, she's stunning. The soundtrack was later rereleased under the title "The Intimate Ella" but is now back out there under its original name.</p><p>"Then You've Never Been Blue," performed by Ella Fitzgerald.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LbCxSqF6wok" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=LbCxSqF6wo</span><span class="invisible">k</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/EllaFitzgerald" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>EllaFitzgerald</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Jazz" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Jazz</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/LetNoManWriteMyEpitaph" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>LetNoManWriteMyEpitaph</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Intimate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Intimate</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: OK, I'm giving you a whole album this time. As an antidote to the cold snap, I listened to this film soundtrack, from a neglected neo-noir film from the 90s, and full of blues music redolent of hot dry summer days. Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: I'm going a bit dark today....in 2016 Ross Crean composed a chamber opera based on the classic horror story "The Great God Pan" by Arthur Machen. The story, of a woman born from a union between a human and an otherworldly force, and who grows to wreak a path of destruction, is regarded as one of the all-time greats. This adaptation makes her a more nuanced character, a femme fatale who is also a symbol of female liberation, and also a victim of forces beyond her understanding or control. </p><p>So, here's a sample from it...</p><p>"Gethsemane," composed by Ross Crean, performed by Sarah Thompson Johansen.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTTlCHjt_-8" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=BTTlCHjt_-</span><span class="invisible">8</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ModernOpera" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ModernOpera</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/RossCrean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RossCrean</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ArthurMachen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ArthurMachen</span></a></p>
