vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 365 of 365</p><p>It's my last selection for this whole "Music of the Day" thing, and of course it's gonna be John Williams.</p><p>The end credits suite for "Revenge of the Sith" was, at the time, Williams' way to say goodbye to the Star Wars universe. George Lucas had said it was going to be the last of the movies, and for just-barely-in-college me, having grown up with all six of the movies, it was truly the end of an era.</p><p>Williams put in only one piece from the film itself into the end credits, "Battle of the Heroes" (which is a cue that I could conduct in my sleep, if need be), but also brings in more triumphant themes from the very first Star Wars: the theme for Princess Leia &amp; The Throne Room finale. It does a great job of ending things on a celebratory note.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/ZK52tEenER8?si=PTMfn0qqkdX-6iOq" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/ZK52tEenER8?si=PTMfn0</span><span class="invisible">qqkdX-6iOq</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 364 of 365</p><p>I think that my single favorite score from Michael Giacchino is for 2009's "Star Trek". I love that it modernizes the sound for the series, but still has a nautical, sailing feel that Jerry Goldsmith and James Horner injected into the films that they scored. Giacchino's interpretation of that feeling ends up adding energy to things (kind of like the film does - weird!)... but it also knows when to slow down and take its time.</p><p>The highlight cue is "Enterprising Young Men", when we first see the Enterprise in its full glory. The main theme's first use in this cue really gives the sense of sailing off into the unknown.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/xzKwPKi4fEY?si=MRSh83wMPD0t-vcK" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/xzKwPKi4fEY?si=MRSh83</span><span class="invisible">wMPD0t-vcK</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 363 of 365</p><p>The fourth movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 is among the most famous musical compositions of all time, and for good reason. There's something about the melody and the various developments that it goes through, not to mention the sheer scale of the work itself.</p><p>Getting to sing in a chorale that's performing it is truly something else, and it's an experience that I've been a part of. One of the highlights of my musical career.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/Zeai3SnvzyI?si=jwr20VWO8Ql3Qwdf" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/Zeai3SnvzyI?si=jwr20V</span><span class="invisible">WO8Ql3Qwdf</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 362 of 365</p><p>Thomas Newman has a marvelous ability to write scores that are both atmospheric &amp; seemingly random, while also being very melodic. This apparent dichotomy is best demonstrated in the exhilarating emotional high point of the film "The Shawshank Redemption".</p><p>This cue, which shares its name with the film itself, is from the point in the film where the protagonist, wrongly accused of murder, makes his escape from Shawshank Prision after nearly 20 years within its walls. It's a harrowing journey through horrible, disgusting conditions, but the sheer triumph as Andy Dufrane stands, free, in the rain, metaphorically &amp; literally cleansed is reenforced by the biggest moment in the entire score. </p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/arsOwUMw7x4?si=I8gWkQS1-992VbEq" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/arsOwUMw7x4?si=I8gWkQ</span><span class="invisible">S1-992VbEq</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 361 of 365</p><p>When Ben Folds writes songs that are contemplative, they somehow sound exactly like my thoughts. Its spooky - but also a testament to his songwriting ability.</p><p>"I'm Not the Man" (co-written by Alica Witt) is about the realization that you're growing up. That life has not only changed around you, but you've also changed too - sometimes in ways that you don't recognize.</p><p>The album that this song was on was a collaboration between Folds &amp; the yMusic chamber ensemble. The sextet replaced the normal backing band for Folds, and I absolutely love the results.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/F_pmtxb6a-Q?si=Y7yWx8YffI-ae70Q" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/F_pmtxb6a-Q?si=Y7yWx8</span><span class="invisible">YffI-ae70Q</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 360 of 365</p><p>The churning low strings and distorted horns towards the beginning of "The Fanatic" create the intense atmosphere and high-energy of the mission in Destiny 2 that this mission is from. The crazy brass licks and syncopated rhythms throughout the rest of the cue seem like they must have been fun to record.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/videogamescores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>videogamescores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/497jQraHhwg?si=NHKWvlvYpr82zfZa" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/497jQraHhwg?si=NHKWvl</span><span class="invisible">vYpr82zfZa</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 359 of 365</p><p>"Sing, Sing, Sing" is almost assuredly the song that pops into your head whenever swing music is mentioned. It's an exemplar of the genre, with nearly every technique used in swing music. The most famous recording is from 1937, by Benny Goodman &amp; His Orchestra. Featuring Gene Krupa's drumming and Goodman's clarinet, it's my favorite version.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/u_E0UVNtJ9Y?si=FdQb5jIoGfeGoihj" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/u_E0UVNtJ9Y?si=FdQb5j</span><span class="invisible">IoGfeGoihj</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 358 of 365</p><p>A spin-off series from "The Mandalorian", 2021's "The Book of Boba Fett" got a new main theme/end titles piece from composer Ludwig Göransson. Featuring mainly male chorus chants and shouts, it ended up evolving throughout the seven episodes, gaining lyrics and bigger instrumentation.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/tvscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tvscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/3a0tH0fkvW8?si=S-FOKrJqKCwBdFrQ" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/3a0tH0fkvW8?si=S-FOKr</span><span class="invisible">JqKCwBdFrQ</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 357 of 365</p><p>Three Dog Night's "Joy to the World" does a great job of putting you into a good mood. Everything about it is upbeat.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/EVcpKjXYa5c?si=1ezlJ2nGHafXQ0HJ" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/EVcpKjXYa5c?si=1ezlJ2</span><span class="invisible">nGHafXQ0HJ</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 356 of 365</p><p>Once in a while a composer gets to write a fake national anthem for a film, and one was needed for "The Hunger Games". The main melody and lyrics were written by members of the band Arcade Fire, with an orchestrated version appearing throughout the film by the score's composer, James Newton Howard.</p><p>The lyrics are suitably terrifying if you really listen to them, along with the overabundance of brass and percussion. It's a good piece of music that does its job of giving an ultra-nationalist, fascistic feel to the film's score.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/75JscXQKV50?si=2FUV4oOgo8SfalxY" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/75JscXQKV50?si=2FUV4o</span><span class="invisible">Ogo8SfalxY</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 355 of 365</p><p>It's one of my favorite Christmas songs, and it's also the best song from the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas". The lyrics are fun, and it lends an interesting perspective to the idea of the holiday itself. The melody is catchy, the orchestration is damn near perfect.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/0KW0AiVuY0U?si=gWnqsgzMW7ePYp0-" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/0KW0AiVuY0U?si=gWnqsg</span><span class="invisible">zMW7ePYp0-</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 354 of 365</p><p>There's a thing that happens in filmmaking in regard to scores called temp tracking, when the editor(s) of the film put in pre-existing music to either help establish, or to bring out a particular feeling or pace. The idea is that the music will be removed once the scene is edited, and the film's composer will write something new.</p><p>Alas, sometimes the director of the film will love the temp music so much that they have the composer essentially copy it. This can be subtle - maybe just tempo or a chord progression.... but sometimes it can be much closer to plagiarism. That's what happened to Elliot Goldenthal's score to the film "Titus" - some of its music was used to temp the blockbuster film "300". It was so egregious that the film studio issued a statement (I'm not sure if there was a lawsuit involved or not....)</p><p>"Victorius Titus" features chorus as the primary 'instrument' and sound, establishing the main musical idea for the cue. Percussion and brass then enter in bold fashion, backed by swirling woodwinds and strings. It's a hypnotic piece of writing.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/npWD166o8Gc?si=NZ8SNoiB2iVcSHkh" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/npWD166o8Gc?si=NZ8SNo</span><span class="invisible">iB2iVcSHkh</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 353 of 365</p><p>"Tom Sawyer" is the famous song by Rush. One of those songs that is more than the sum of its parts.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/auLBLk4ibAk?si=zYqAKEwLwJPkr7yl" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/auLBLk4ibAk?si=zYqAKE</span><span class="invisible">wLwJPkr7yl</span></a></p>
vandalsibs<p>Music of the Day, 352 of 365</p><p>Some people are put off by the early-era full CG motion capture visuals, but the film "The Polar Express" is one of my favorite holiday movies. Alan Silvestri's score does a great job of mixing cheer, mystery, and traditional holiday songs.</p><p>"Seeing is Believing" is a cue that does all of those things: starts off with a simple melody that leads into a moody ostinato from the choir. It builds towards a rousing arrangement of "Jingle Bells" that is one of my favorites, then finally wraps things up with one of Silvestri's main themes for the film.</p><p><a href="https://c.im/tags/musicoftheday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>musicoftheday</span></a> <a href="https://c.im/tags/filmscores" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>filmscores</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://youtu.be/O2pBSmnXxxk?feature=shared" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">youtu.be/O2pBSmnXxxk?feature=s</span><span class="invisible">hared</span></a></p>
