5 of today’s justices personally & significantly #benefited from the consequences of the ruling, including by accepting jobs or appointments under #Bush’s admin [add Neil #Gorsuch to the above list]. Not only have none of these #conservative jurists expressed remorse about their actions or the decision, w/ #MooreVHarper they have in fact normalized the court’s meddling so that if the opportunity arises, they can do so again.

In Aug, #SCOTUS used its #ShadowDocket to allow #Arizona, a key swing state, to require proof of citizenship w/ voter registration forms at the request of the #RNC.

But perhaps least known—& yet, most important—was #MooreVHarper, a 2023 ruling in which the court set the stage for the next #BushVGore scenario by holding that the justices themselves would have THE LAST SAY when it comes to questions over state-level #election rules & disputes.

The Supreme Court’s decision in Moore v. Harper on Tuesday is a major reprieve for American democracy. By rejecting the radical idea that state legislatures have quasi-unlimited power to determine how elections are run, the court made it harder for lawmakers to engage in the shenanigans that Donald Trump encouraged to overturn his 2020 presidential reelection loss. #Jan6coup #TrumpCrimes #MooreVHarper

@Dahlialith Judge Luttig: "The Supreme Court's rejection today are enormous for the continuing investigations by the Department of Justice, the Attorney General, and Jack Smith, and to the former President's and his allies' conduct on January 6th.

Today's decision knocks the props out from under what would have been one of their principal defenses to charges of wrongdoing on January 6th."

The US Supreme Court today decided to respect precedent when it comes to state election disputes.
“This decision merely reiterates what most people always thought the law was: Legislatures cannot legislate in ways that are inconsistent with the law that governs their actions and their state. This conclusion seems obvious, like saying the sky is blue or water is wet.“

The ConversationSupreme Court says state lawmakers can't just ignore state law when drawing voting districts or choosing presidential electorsIt’s official: State courts can review lawmakers’ election-district boundary decisions to ensure they comply with state law.

@StillIRise1963 Over the long haul, #MoorevHarper will lead to more federal Supreme Court review of state judicial interpretations of state constitutions. That’s worrying. I bet you and I agree that the only solution to this dynamic is a set of reforms to the federal Supreme Court. I think it is basically fear of that happening that is preventing the current Court from further eviscerating voting rights.

I don't know if I've ever made a video this quickly, but here it is -- talking about the #MoorevHarper decision (which went the right way, thankfully), although that doesn't mean the Supreme Court is to be trusted, as it were, on any issue. REJOICE, the unaccountable high priests of law decided that democracy shall live for now!
