For many years now, I've been a part of the rust mentorship programme:

rustbeginners.github.io/awesom

I possibly get maybe one or two emails a year, asking me for help -- and often is the case that the person I end up speaking to just tends to "disappear"; I'm not sure why. I don't **think** it's me, per se -- although it might be! I don't recall ever being rude.

But just a few weeks ago, I had someone contact me, and so far, he's utterly genuine. He's asking all the right questions, and it's an utter delight to be able to help him. THIS is what I signed up for all those years ago -- to be able to do this for someone else. He's not doing this to solve a homework question, or anything. He's preempting possible changes to the language stack where he works.

Amazing! I'm the lucky one being in this position.

How many other #rust #mentors are out there? It's made me think about the group I'm a part of. We never meet or speak as a group, and I feel we ought to.

If anyone is interested in this sort of stuff, let me know.

Oh, and by the way, I am *NOT* an expert on Rust, so I'm learning all the time --- be it on my own or through mentoring others. But this is the point -- mentoring doesn't imply "guru", but moreoever, it denotes a relatioonship of trust to figure out the right thing, together. :)

I can't stress enough the importance of #DEI in #hamradio and other #STEM, #STEAM, and #STEMM activities. There simply ain't enough old white dudes with cats to keep #amateurradio going. Besides, wouldn't you like to #mentor someone young who is not like you? My first #mentors (#elmers) were a white couple who taught in #Montclair (#NJ) public schools. They gave me my novice test in their apartment. (I'll never forget getting bitten by ants as I took the exam on their couch. 😂 )

SketchplanationsBuild Your Panel of Advisors to Ask for AdviceBuilding your own panel of advisors is a simple technique to expand your perspectives and guide yourself through tough decisions. Think of people whose judgement and values you respect, add them to your mental panel, and when faced with a dilemma, ask, "What would you do?" While a real panel of advisors is invaluable, an imaginary panel has advantages: it's not limited to people you can call, and it requires no one else's time. Your panel can include your mum, Uncle Jim, your best friend, or your high school science teacher. But why stop there? You could invite Taylor Swift, Marcus Aurelius, Eleanor Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, or the Buddha—famous figures whose qualities and wisdom inspire you. Diversity is key to your panel's success, as it brings a broader range of perspectives. Uncle Jim would likely approach a problem very differently from the Buddha, and you can access both viewpoints simply by considering how each might respond. It's curious how we can get more diverse perspectives by ourselves simply by adopting the view or mindset of someone else (as we understand them). In this way, it's rather like De Bono's 6 Thinking Hats technique. And it reminds me of my favourite research results where people generated more ideas when prompted to ideate as if they were a creative person. Benjamin Franklin regularly sought to emulate his role models, as in his 13th virtue: "Humility: Imitate Jesus and Socrates." Similarly, Napoleon Hill described meeting with "Invisible Counselors" in Think and Grow Rich to gain insights from imagined mentors. I can't remember where I first came across this strategy but I love to put it into action. Who would you add to your panel? “In recent years, my academic perspective has evolved. I wish to remain active in research, but more than teaching, I want to share my passion. My passion is mathematics—its structure, its theorems, and ultimately, its beauty. I believe that by sharing this passion, I can inspire others to appreciate the elegance and depth of mathematics. I aim to create an engaging and stimulating learning environment where students can explore, question, and develop a profound understanding of mathematical concepts. My goal is to ignite their curiosity and foster a lifelong love for the subject, just as my mentors did for me.” - Liliana Esquivel

“My journey hasn’t been without challenges. Being a female in a predominantly male field can be daunting, especially since there aren’t many females pursuing physics. In my class, males make up about 85%. This disparity has been challenging, but it has also motivated me. In the future, I hope to contribute to the field of physics through research and innovation. I want to inspire other young girls, especially those from Africa, to pursue their passions in STEM fields. Curiosity has been my driving force, and I intend to keep it that way.” - Dorcas Seshie Afi Mawutor

Two teachers in the illustration field said some things in their last couple podcasts that have shattered my respect for them.

It’s been a gut punch, and I feel naive.

As I grow older, and the sands shift under our feet in the art world, I realize there are a lot of grognards out there who couldn’t care less, with enough apathy to reveal their dismissiveness, ignorance, and callousness.

I had to take a step back from them. I won’t be listening to their advice again.

It is sad in recent weeks to learn of the sudden and permanent closure of Wakefield’s Vortex Bar and Nightclub. Having put on a few shows in recent times, and playing there myself with Solstice, I was immediately impressed by the quality of both sound and staging. A professional, talented crew always worked hard with the bands, and a top-class lighting rig ensured each night looked spectacular. However, the venue was never as well served by attendance and especially transport as it deserved to be. Hitting the bottom line, as such circumstances conspire across the country.

We did what we could during the Mentors tour, where the Wakefield date became an impromptu fundraiser, but the running costs finally proved too much. All of a sudden the venue has shuttered, and I wish everyone involved the very best going forwards. Although I often dropped in after band practice for a sly beverage, I regret not going more often when I could.

Looking ahead, August’s Deitus gig has been relocated to The Fenton in Leeds. I hope folk can make it to that one, and if not then refunds are available.

This leaves a gap in the Wakefield scene that I’m sure will be filled one way or another, but for now the town is a little quieter for the absence.
