✧ flag of Japan ✧

The national flag of Japan is a white rectangular flag with a large red disc (representing the Sun) in the center. It is officially called Nisshōki in Japanese, but more commonly known as the Hinomaru. Although considered the de facto flag, it was designated as Japan's national flag on 13 August 1999. Japan used to have a new year celebration, called #Shōgatsu around the same time. Alas, the traditional Tenpō calendar was completely abandoned in 1873 AD as part of the #MeijiRestoration, and since then Japan has used the Gregorian calendar exclusively.

Addendum: Since the #ChineseCalendar depends on the exact positions of the sun and moon, traditional New Year celebrations in #Vietnam and #Korea can happen a day earlier than in #China. They use the same calendar, but are in a different time zone; as such, the month might start a day earlier if the #NewMoon happens to fall very close to #midnight.

#Japan would celebrate New Year's Day on the same day as Kore had the government not abandoned the traditional celebrations in the #MeijiRestoration

@histodons a few cool pictures I found trolling the Wikipedia entry for the Battle of Port Arthur
(The Battle of Port Arthur was the opening engagement of the Russo-Japanese War. Basically Japan was worried that Russia threatened its influence in the Far East. Late night in Feb of 1904 a Japanese fleet snuck up on the Russian fleet anchored at Port Arthur -a port leased to Russia by China- and engaged them in naval combat. The Russian Navy succefully drove Japan off the battlefield, although Russia sustained heavy causalities)
