Mastodon BlogBringing Quote Posts to Mastodon
More from Mastodon

I'm not going to lie: automatically expiring mutes are how I've managed to keep several people in my feed.

Don't get me wrong, I like reading what these people post. Most of the time. But sometimes they overwhelm my timeline, and I need a break. The ability to mute these accounts for a couple hours is why I can keep them around. If I couldn't do that I'd have to drop them.

Great feature!

Hello everyone! Nicholas is back with another post, and today I want to dive into some valuable features on Mastodon that you should definitely consider enabling to increase your visibility and engagement.

Let’s start with your profile visibility. If you're looking to expand your reach and get more followers, there's a key feature you need to activate. Head over to the "Privacy and Reach" settings on your Mastodon account, and make sure to click on the option labeled "Feature profile and posts in discovery algorithms." This feature plays a vital role in boosting your presence within the Mastodon network by making your profile and posts easier to discover for users who are browsing the platform. By enabling it, your content becomes more likely to appear in people’s feeds, which in turn can help you attract more followers and interact with a broader audience.

But that's not all! If you’re hoping to have your profile and posts appear beyond Mastodon—especially on popular search engines like Google, Bing, and others—there’s another setting that you’ll want to toggle on. Make sure to enable the option "Include profile page in search engines." By doing this, you’re allowing your profile page to be indexed and show up in search engine results, which can be a game changer for expanding your reach outside of the platform. When people search for your name or keywords related to your content, your Mastodon profile could pop up, offering a new way for potential followers to discover you.

Taking advantage of these features will give you a much better chance to connect with a larger audience, not only within Mastodon but across the internet. It’s an easy yet effective way to make sure your profile stands out and gets the attention it deserves.

@TechConnectify Never realized that this was a thing either. It's been turned on for me as well on the birdsite without ever noticing.

I guess it is what usually hides responses and you have to click "Show more replies" in order to display all of them.

Mastodon should definitely develop something similar that can be opted into in order to handle very large followings.

All this reminded me of this GIF video. Prime example of what one wants to avoid:

We need to talk about UX.

If you turn off slow-mode on the web interface (on chrome), the federated feed is completely unreadable as it jankily scrolls past.

Surely adding content to a feed should never change the scroll position - just the scroll*bar* position.

And when you click the 'new items' button, you're scrolled... *somewhere*, neither at the top of the previously-top post, nor at the top of the feed, nor anywhere particular that I can see.

Why?

It would be cool and neat to automatically show/hide certain CW tags.

It's tedious to have to manually click every CW you're happy to see, but turning them off wholesale is a bit drastic.

Could filter lists could be extended to hide-these-CWs functionality, rather than outright blocking the posts?
