Missing my home state of Michigan these days. I made 3 roundtrip road trips to and from Michigan in 2022, driving over the Mackinac Bridge each time. Using my dashboard mount for my iPhone14 and hands-free voice commands to get the shots, I got some fantastic shots while crossing. I'm approaching the first tower and you can see the second tower up ahead.

The length of the main span (between the 2 main towers) of this suspension bridge is 3,800 feet (1,158 meters).

Going through cell phone photos from a trip to northern Michigan last summer and this one caught my eye. The clouds were mesmerizing and there was very little traffic on the Mackinac Bridge. I was heading north to the Upper Peninsula. I love crossing the Mighty Mac and have done so in all kinds of weather. Since I was driving, I had my phone mounted on the dash and used voice commands to get each shot, hands-free and safely.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, at 8,614 feet (2,626 m), the Mackinac Bridge is still the longest suspension bridge between anchorages in the Western Hemisphere.

Getting this photo was a major adventure. I managed to throw my electrolytes out of whack during the day while I was scouting it, so I was awake and sick much of the night. Somewhere in there I was bitten by a wolf spider that climbed up my pant leg, which bite became infected. That ultimately led to four days of IV antibiotics.

Anyway, you can purchase a souvenir of my big photographic adventure and relive the glory. Spider bites available separately.

This is the view from under the Mackinac Bridge. The "Mighty Mac" is a suspension bridge that links Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsula. It spans the Straits of Mackinac, a body of water that connects two of the Great Lakes - Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The Bridge opened in 1957.

An #introduction is in order with the arrival of new people! I've been here on SFBA.social since November 2022 but not active until now. I feel fortunate to have to have found my home on Mastodon so quickly -- as one of the SFBA admins says - they are bringing social back into social media. And that's just perfect for me!

I'm a professional landscape photographer, but in addition to all you see in my bio, I've got all sorts of other interests.

Be curious what happens. I did not use a bunch of informational bots when I was on Twitter however there was one that I do miss. It's actually for the Mackinac Bridge here in Michigan. The bridge going from the lower peninsula to the upper peninsula or vice versa. It's basically the only way to get across.

They always have really great notifications on weather related issues that can slow traffic on the bridge or even if the bridge was closed.

I had reached out months ago to see if they were going to support Mastodon and they said they could not yet because they are bound to follow the State of Michigan social media policies and mastodon is not on that approved list.

Hoping that is going to be "fixed" soon.
