Just filled out the ballot for 4 of the 7 so-called non-partisan positions on the local shitty, er, city, council (aka The 7 Dwarves).

Yeah, city elections are in the 'off' years.

Hard to get good info on these idiots, er, candidates.

Voted against 2 of 3 incumbents. Didn't really vote for the 3rd incumbent, the other 2 seemed worse.

Hopefully these people will get elected and improve things. But I'm not counting on it...

<sigh> 😫

On Tuesday, Larry Krasner easily won the Democratic primary ahead of a November election that could see him win a third term as district attorney of Philadelphia. @bolts’s @taniel writes about Krasner’s role as one of a number of progressive prosecutors across the United States, the opposition he faced from everyone from Elon Musk to the city’s Democratic Party, and why he continues to be supported across Philadelphia.

@bolts is the best magazine for keeping your eye on America’s local politics, and possibly detecting if a shift is happening (were we the only ones glued to the Omaha, NE mayoral elections earlier this week)? Alex Burness writes about judge elections in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where a “slate of eight” progressive-endorsed candidates are running. Their supporters hope that the prospective judges, who come from public defender, social work and civil rights backgrounds, will have more understanding of the issues faced by criminal defendants. Check out the second list for @taniel’s list of elections to watch in May.

At very busy garden centre, first thing today. Looked around, and I realised a sizeable proportion of the mainly older people there blithely voted for a protofascist party in VE week. I suspect they think their parents and grandparents would have approved, conflating patriotism with nationalism. Heigh ho...

In summary, did best in what has sometimes been characterised in the wake of the referendum as 'left-behind' – places that have profited less from and expansion and where a more outlook on is more common."

Sir John Curtice: The map that reveals the extent of Reform's triumph - BBC News

BBC NewsSir John Curtice: The map that reveals the extent of Reform's triumphIt suggests the party was particularly popular among those who voted for Brexit in 2016 and for Boris Johnson in 2019.

"There doesn’t seem to be any understanding of the deep-seated emotion in the reaction of Labour supporters to the party’s behaviour in government over the past 10 months. There used to be talk of the need for emotional literacy in politics. What we are witnessing is a staggering level of emotional illiteracy"
John McDonnell in a righteous rant.

The Guardian · Labour alienated its core and failed to attract Reform voters. Now will Starmer change tack?By John McDonnell

Our local election results are in

Our local council has switched to Lib Dem control (good) but our ward (local area) now has one of the swivel-eyed-loonies from reform which is disappointing. Not that I expect them do anything but make noise

The national result of reform gains is scary because so many people seem happy to vote far right

Nobody likes a Tory. Everyone hates Starmer. The next General Election will be important
