Is my understanding of how/when Mastodon fetches data from links in posts incorrect?

I thought attaching an image to your post should prevent DDoS-ing a site you're linking to.
My apologies to the Slashdotted admin.
"Please don't share our content because of server load" sounds an awful lot like an admin/config problem.
Also sounds a lot like a plea for a centralized link preview farm.
Oh no the server is Melton, @lisamelton

Anyone venturing into this solution space?
@feditips any idea why the #linkpreview is adding a bit to the #url after the slash, thus breaking it? Like this "https://www.notechforapartheid.com/notechforapartheid.com" when the url in the post doesn't contain anything after the slash?

@grb090423 You're more than welcome!
We have a bit of a challenge in that our post scheduling tool doesn't support Alt Text so a couple of times a day I have to visit all the posts with images and manually add Alt Text afterwards.
There's a problem in Mastodon with certain link preview images in WebP of AVIF (https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/14983) so for some sources we need to put images in manually.
A few things I’ve learnt since joining Mastodon World
Putting a link as the last item in a toot appears to enable a preview of it to appear
Always adding Alt Text to images is appreciated by those who use screen readers
Capitalising each word in a hashtag makes it easier to read for both people and screen readers
Listing hashtags after the toot rather than embedding them within makes it easier to read
CW: Relatively uninformed hot-take on in-Mastodon link-previews and Cloudflare, the JWZ incident etc.
I made this nice cover image but Mastodon doesn't seem to like the usual Open Graphs and Birdsite Cards. Any hints? #AskAMastodon #AskingForAFriend #CoverImage #FeaturedImage #LinkPreview
