Walkers are WelcomeWalkers are Welcome Town - Spilsby and HundlebySpilsby and Hundleby are an adjoining town and village on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, with walks available towards the coast, out onto the Fens and into the Wolds. Andrea PoveyTiny window, with an arch above, on the West front of All Saints Church in Tealby.In his wonderful book The Buildings of England, Nikolaus Pevsner writes of being puzzled by the small arched window and the archway above the door on the outside of the tower. He writes‘It is small with plain chamfered imposts and an unmoulded arch. Above the window, whose headstone is later Norman. Carved on it are small heads, two birds, and a hood mould on two snouted monster heads - all tiny. Does this go with the tremendous tower arch above the nave? But the arch is pointed? Above this arch, but pushed to the right, is a round arched opening. Where can ig have led to? The thing becomes more mysterious, as above the opening, in line with it, is another, but appearing above the roof, and this has a moulded surrounding a pointed arch. Both find no explanation inside the tower’I noticed how small the window was and the remains of decoration that has been described, but I cannot say much more than that. Andrea PoveyThe parish church in the Lincolnshire village of Tealby is dedicated to All Saints and is made out of local ironstone which gives it its glorious orange colour. Like many of our country's churches, All Saints has been restored, but its origins are in the 12th century, however parts of the tower appear to be Norman.
