I forgot to add some other hobbies and topics I like!

I am also a #photographer who shoots #Fujifilm #XT5 mirrorless and Canon compact camera.

I love #ContentCreators , #Videography , and #WebDesign too. I try to avoid using Adobe products and use Perpetual or Life Time Deal licences.

***

I also like #FOSS, #OpenSource, #SelfHost, and learn #WebDesign.

I am against #GenAI. But I am interested in #EthicalAI and #AIforGood #AIforA11y.

Thanks to what happened to Twitter and increased costs of SaaS, I became interested in #Decentralized #SelfHosted #HomeLab stuff.

I am a #LifeLongLearner who is interested in #AdultEducation and #A11yInEducation.

Another hobby I hope to return to is #Blogging and #ProcreateArt / #DigitalDrawing.

I listen to almost any music genre except classics, hardcore heavy metal rock, and some raps.

But I love #FolkMusic, #IndieMusic, #ElectricMusic, and #EDM.

My favourite #ElectricDanceMusic are #Psytrance, #Trance, #Techno, #Hardstyle, and #House. I like #raves. Mostly undergrounds or bush parties.

It’s been two years today since I arrived here, and better late than never, here’s an #introduction post.

I have been Marence since Usenet and Freenet days. I remember #retrotech when it was new tech. I have been a server, civil servant, mechanic, painter, technician, costumer, hardware & software instructor, spfx makeup artist, actor, crafter, torch singer, videographer, author, composer, and filmmaker.

Why do I enjoy social media (previously twitter, now Mastodon)?

TL;DR:
I love to learn new things, &
I'm dyslexic.

Micro blogging (remember when this kind of thing was called microblogging?) lets me serendipitously interact with many fragments, of different sorts, in a crazy stream-of-consciousness flow:
word-play, arcane facts, news, philosophy, memoirs, film & book recommendations, recipes, microfiction, art.
It's idea porn.

Long live #IdeaSex!

In 2024, I'm shifting to #nonfiction both #books and #television. Going for an ~80/20 nonfic/fic split.

Why? My free time is valuable to me and for me, if I'm not learning, I feel like something's missing.

Sure, you can learn from fiction, but it's often a different kind, a different focus. In 2023, I read 57 works, only 16 were non-fic, (28%). For me, that's much too low.

Gestern, 29.

In recent years, I have met many high schoolers planning to enter #IT because they want to become #AI practitioners. I have some advice and admonitions for them:

• You can call any AI framework API without a foundation in #mathematics, but you will not understand what your code is doing without at least a preliminary knowledge of undergrad-level linear algebra.

• You can implement fancy AI applications without formal training in mathematics, but you will not be able to analyse and design learning algorithms without a solid foundation in linear algebra, probability, statistics, multivariate calculus, and variational calculus, at the very least. And basic knowledge of abstract algebra, digital signal processing, neuroscience, and cognitive psychology will always come in handy.

• When, in a not-so-distant future, quantum computers become practicable, AI applications will move to that platform. Then, you will not even be able to read a programme without a solid grasp of quantum mechanics, in addition to the above mentioned foundational knowledge.

• It is true that you can get a decent entry-level job in IT without higher education, but you will not progress far as a technologist.

• Sure, you can "move up" to a middle manager (pronounced "middle meddler") role, but even on the management mound, you will not reach the peak without at least an MBA.

• You can, of course, start your own company but there, too, you must continually educate yourself about technology, accounting, business, economy, management, regulatory compliance, etc., for the rest of your career.

The bottom line, kids—become a #LifelongLearner, whatever the path you take.
