There has been the first principled resignation from the current #uk #Laɓour government. All three previous departures have been related to perceived improprieties. The resignation of #anneliesedodds as minister for international development is in quite a different category - and may be much more ominous and significant - recalling resignations in 2003 over #iraq and 1950.over the funding of #rearmament .
The bipartisan mantra arose from the Faustian bargain made by an ambitious #Laɓour politician who was shadow #homesecretary at the time of the #bulgercase in 1993 . This broke the previous consensus in favour of rehabilitation which dated back to the time in the 1900s when #winstonchurchill was #homesecretary ! That bargain propelled #tonyblair to the leadership of the #Laɓour party and to #downingstreet . Another aspect of his legacy that haunts us in the #uk !
Within #Laɓour those donors are often but not always associated with #labourtogether - which means among others #morganmcsweeny . However there is still space within the #labourparty for around 300k members and for #tradesunions so there is a certain degree of countervailing power also.
Even the most right wing of traditional #Laɓour people used to think very differently - notably #hughgaitskell and his supporters.
BAE systems is a legacy of the 1974 to 1979 #Laɓour government which nationalised the aerospace industry - arguably the last gasp of 'Clause Four Socialism' . Unlike shipbuilding and steel it seems to have survived privatisation in the 1980s.
He - #jdvance - appears to have acquired a #uk fellow traveller in the #HouseofLords in the form of #lordglasman ! #mauriceglasman - who is a #Laɓour peer - has demanded the sacking of #lordhermer, the current #attorneygeneral , apparently for taking the rule of law too seriously! Last month #mauriceglasman attended the inauguration of 47 as an invited guest.

I agree. The poll cited is by #focaldata - who have an excellent record due not least to #jameskanagasooriam (whose work in #scotland rescued #theresamay in #ukgeneralelection2017 ). #electoralcalculus has produced very similar results to it. Using their open access model suggests that a return of just 3% of voters back to #labour from #reformUK would give #Laɓour a substantial majority. The 3% group is not anti-immigration but expects actual delivery from the #labour government.
By comparison #hammersmithandfulham can be regarded as something of a 'success story' for #Laɓour in #london and a serious cause of annoyance to the #conservatives . One consequence of this annoyance may well have been the conspicuous failure of #BorisJohnson when #mayoroflondon to provide funds to repair #hammersmithbridge preferring instead to waste public money on vanity projects further down the #thames - at least one of which #sadiqkhan had to cancel.
#labour won #hammersmithandfulham the same year as it did #croydon - both from the #conservatives in the 2014 council elections. Since then their political trajectories have diverged - with the latter - #croydon - having become something of an embarrassment to #Laɓour in recent years and having both faced the equivalent of bankruptcy and elected albeit narrowly a #conservative executive #mayor in 2022.
The #londonborough of #hammersmithandfulham is quite interesting politically. Under #conservative rule it was part of the ill fated #triborough experiment - along with #westminster and #kensingtonandchelsea . #hammersmithandfulham left the #triborough after #Laɓour won control of the council in 2014 - also the year when it introduced free home care. The #labour administration there thus predates the national leadership of both #jeremycorbyn and #keirstarmer .
This is because too many people in the #Laɓour leadership appear - at least - to remain fixated on owner occupation without grasping that the economic and social conditions for its expansion - or even maintaining its share of housing tenure - no longer exist in the #uk . Recreating them is not impossible but will take quite a long time - and is likely to involve improvement in the security of employment among other things.
#ukelections2025 - A lean year ?
It looks as if there may be many less elections than usual in the #uk this year because many local elections may be postponed by a year as a result of the proposed reorganisation of local government. This would mean that there would be less of a check than usual on the reliability of #opinionpolls . This could fuel highly questionable claims as to actual voting intentions. A problem for established political parties - among them #Laɓour ?
The first time this particular ploy was tried - as far as I know - was during the 1945 General Election campaign in the #uk . #winstonchurchill suggested that #Laɓour would introduce a #gestapo if elected. This backfired spectacularly after the #Laɓour leader #clementattlee responded in an exemplary manner. #Laɓour obtained its first ever majority in the #houseofcommons in that election.
I'm sorry, Ed Milliband, but you can't trumpet Labour's green credentials when you're spending £19 billion on a half-baked carbon capture plan that serves only to keep the oil industry going.
