Paul H :tinoflag:<p>Budapest, 1986. Speaking of interesting times, the late 1980’s was certainly one such period. Here President Gorbachev is visiting downtown Budapest in a time of unprecedented change. He is accompanied by his wife, Raisa, who is having her hand held by János Kádár’s wife, Maria. Kádár, on the right, has time for a cigarette. Interpreters hover around the Gorbachev’s, but not the Kádárs whom speak Russian.</p><p>Source: Fortepan [197951] / Zoltán Szalay</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/fortepan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fortepan</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Budapest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Budapest</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/K%C3%A1d%C3%A1r" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kádár</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Gorbachev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Gorbachev</span></a></p>
Paul H :tinoflag:<p>1960. Somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. One for the history buffs. Hungarian leader János Kádár playing shuffleboard on the Soviet passenger liner Balitka on his way to the US for the XVth session of the UN General Assembly. That's Nikta Khrushchev on the right, and possibly, Alexei Kosygin of the left.</p><p>Source: Fortepan [217231] / Album059</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/fortepan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fortepan</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Hungary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hungary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/K%C3%A1d%C3%A1r" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kádár</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Khrushchev" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Khrushchev</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Kosygin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kosygin</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/SovietUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SovietUnion</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Balitka" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Balitka</span></a></p>
Paul H :tinoflag:<p>Hungary, 1965. János Kádár, officially General Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Workers' Party, and Soviet leader Brezhnev, and Communist Party Secretary Podgorny, enjoy some lighter moments together. (Not so sure about the man with his hands in the puddle though!) Clearly Russian and Hungarian leaders have often been pals....No different today it would seem.</p><p>Source: Fortepan [217238] / Album059</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/fortepan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fortepan</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Hungary" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Hungary</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/K%C3%A1d%C3%A1r" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kádár</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/SovietUnion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SovietUnion</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.nz/tags/Russia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Russia</span></a></p>
