Been listening to Joseph Conrad’s, Heart of Darkness in the little cracks of time in the day1 and as always being led to the sad and inevitable conclusion that we always fail to learn from what came before.
It was as unreal as everything else—as the philanthropic pretence of the whole concern, as their talk, as their government, as their show of work. The only real feeling was a desire to get appointed to a trading-post where ivory was to be had, so that they could earn percentages. They intrigued and slandered and hated each other only on that account—but as to effectually lifting a little finger—oh, no.

It is 200 miles from where I am in Cair
Been listening to #ColumMcCann perform his novel #Twist.
And I hear in interviews that he sees it relating to #JosephConrad's #TheHeartOfDarkness.
And I find that I've somehow missed that The Heart of Darkness is set in the horror of the #BelgianCongo genocides.
So next to listen to Conrad's book.
Y'all I speak French very well, even if I have a Joseph Conrad level accent. But I had a difficult moment tonight over the word découvrir. Apparently that means you can ask questions. To me, it just meant find out, when used as a command in French. Cue more you know star,I guess. But this actually caused some friction tonight.

There are three #modernist #writers whose #ShortStories remind me of each others', that I often wonder whether they read one another. No matter how unlikely it might be, given their different times and milieux. Here's the list, in rough chronological order:
* #SamuelClemens/ #MarkTwain.
* #BrianONolan/ #FlannOBrien/ #MilesNaGopaleen.
* #HermanCharlesBosman.
Seems most likely that Twain could have been read by the other two.
#JosephConrad fits in here somewhere too, I suspect.
There must be research into this kind of link. Modernist short stories are fundamentally important artefacts of the 20th Century, so this sort of thing must be known.
