"Gentle on My Mind" is a song that was written and originally recorded by #JohnHartford, and released on his second studio album, #EarthwordsAndMusic (1967). Hartford wrote the song after watching #DoctorZhivago in 1966, as he was inspired by the film and his own personal experiences. The lyrics describe the reminiscences of lost love of a man as he travels through the #country.

“Ultimately, the sound you get out of any instrument is yourself. The instrument is only a small percentage of it all. The rest is how you touch it, what your left hand does, what your right hand does, what you hear in your head, and the heart and soul that you put into your performance. Those things allow you to find your sound on any instrument you pick up.” - Dave Holland

Check out the second half of our conversation with the legendary Dave Holland. The bassist will be performing with his New Quartet - with Kris Davis, Jaleel Shaw, and Nasheet Waits- at SMOKE Jazz Club from September 4th to September 8th.

PostGenre - Music beyond category · No Isolation: A Conversation with Dave Holland (Part Two) - PostGenreWe continue our conversation (check out part one here) with NEA Jazz Master Dave Holland by digging into his solo works, bluegrass music, music from around the world, and more. PG: Since musical relationships are very important to you, it would be interesting to know more about your solo bass work on both Emerald Tears

Vassar Clements, John Hartford, Dave Holland (Rounder, 1985)

Holland reunites with Hartford, who first recruited the jazz bassist to play grass on Morning Bugle, and Vassar, from the similarly loose 1975 jam session w/ Norman Blake & co. I was stoked to discover this in the wild without knowing it existed. Till something better comes along... youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFp

I am somewhere in the middle of listening to #johnhartford's studio albums, and man... does he ever have a bad one? Like, the 'worst' so far is the Glittergrass album with the Dillards, which still has this all timer [1]

Do I have to go all the way to the 80's John? (Except, I know Gum Tree Canoe hits for me?)

Anyways, enjoy John's take on the Rolling Stone's "Love in Vain" [2] w/ Sam Bush and Benny Martin.
