The first I harvested this year is this nice . Part of it is black, which is supposed to be the stage before they start to turn red. It was quite a bit hotter than what I'm used to from jalapeños.
The habanero is also starting to get some tiny fruits. Looking forward to tasting those once they're fully grown and red. They should be really hot; for my taste at least.

#RIP Iconic #SanFrancisco eatery #FogCity ( fka #FogCityDiner) which quietly closed on #Embarcadero waterfront after 40 years of dining memories.

Known as an innovative unpretentious #SmallPlates party spot with well stocked bar, it became internationally hailed and oft imitated, hosting post game Super Bowl era 49ers and appearing on screen in tv commercials for #AmEx, & films like 1993's "I Married An Ax Murderer". Initially opened in 1985, the diner was topped by a neon trimmed clock reading "Don't Worry" with exterior coated in a coat of fresh chrome that cost half a million dollars then according to newspaper columnist Herb Caen. Upon entry , a sign mandated “No Crybabies", likely placed by spot's "designer" Pat Kuleto or perhaps partners responsible for all the bills, the two Bills : co-founders Higgins & Upson.

Fare from chef Robert Cubberly at the Battery St spot's peak included #Jalapeno Corn Stix, Lobster #Gazpacho, #Hazelnut & Tomatilla Quesadillas and hearty desserts. Co-founding cook Cindy Pawlcyn also went on to fame via her Napa Valley Mustards Grill, and writing 5 #cookbooks of fave dishes. Her spicy spin gave fun flair to typically dull diner dishes, artfully adding Adobo pepper paste to boring Baked Chicken Breasts, and contributing house made chutney to cheeseburgers...

Instead of a Derby party, today turned into pepper planting. 10 jalapenos went into two square planters, a cal wonder into a big round one, and I potted up 12 assorted others. Now a dozen poblanos in a fake kratsky (a self watering seed starter full of a+b and calmag) are suddenly wilting out of jealousy. So I guess they get soil today too.
The Ring of Fire (8 Habaneros in all the colors, plus 2 ghosties) is still in the Hab-itat DWC indoors but I'm thinking it's almost time for them to move out into the sun..
(I also planted a dozen tomatoes and a ton of purple basil and stuff yesterday but that is all just supporting cast for my pepper recipes)

Personal stuff: watching a total piece of shit spiral into short term hospice is bringing up complicated feelings in the group

I've recently started experimenting with some #homemade chilli relishes and sauces, chillis being one of the few things that grow well in my home soil. Today's creation is a #jalapeño and pineapple sauce made a variety called Lemon Spice. A little nervous considering I completely winged it on the measurements, but it smells amazing.

My other favourite germination trick is so simple. Place the seeds on paper kitchen towels, lock them in a clear zip baggie, spray the paper towel a few times and zip the bag.

During the day I place the bags near a sunlit window sill, at night I place them near the baseboards (thanks Canadian winter:-)). No need for expensive heating pads/mats.

Here we go: seeds planted; waiting for them to sprout.
On the menu this year: to try something really spicy, and to complement it. Additionally Diavolicchio Calabrese, Diavolicchio di Diamante and Peperoncino Etna from seeds which I harvested myself last year. Really hoping those are still alive.
