Good article on the inequalities within the UK tax system which gains most of its revenue from earned/productive labour while unearned/unproductive wealth is mostly untaxed at all. This is why the country has a serious productivity problem (not worker laziness and entitlement as the right wing media and politicians love to trot out ad nauseum). Addressing this inequality in the tax system is going to be key in achieving economic growth that is both sustainable and fair

As Stewart Lansley concludes:

'harnessing a little more of the country’s immense private wealth would make the tax system more equitable & by providing the resources to boost social investment, ease the path to economic recovery'....

So, we do not need to tax wealth until the 'pips squeak' we just need to ratchet up a tax on the highly inflated asset wealth that the rich have enjoyed even while real wages have stagnated.

But who will champion that?

🧵 2/2: #JamesBaldwin prophetically understood how the #AmericanDream itself was the engine of #inequality. It seems obvious now as we witness #capitalism in its last throes, but it was revolutionary in 1965.

"What is crucial here is that unless we can manage to accept, establish some kind of dialog between those people whom I pretend have paid for the American dream and those other people who have not achieved it, we will be in terrible trouble"

Many white South Africans have been mocking their own privilege after the 🍊 in the White House offered them asylum in the US, saying they are victims of anti-white discrimination.

Al Jazeera's Soraya Lennie slightly humorous report made me smile, but her stats on the huge inequality that still exists in South Africa frankly shocked me.

Something tells me Winnie Mandela would not have settled for crumbs.

I wonder what percentage of people waving their hands about what’s going on in the US are college-educated versus those who are not. I am thinking the college educated people feel more threatened and have more to lose than those of us who are have been living with the constant threat of being fired and the economics of being a non-college grad for our entire adult lives.

Every year the President promises change, but the reality for the poor is worse than ever. #SouthAfrica is still drowning in #poverty, #inequality, and violence, while the #ANC does nothing to fix the crisis.

Politicians blame immigrants, criminalize poverty, and ignore the real issues. If the government cared, they'd push for land reform and a basic income. Instead, the system keeps failing the people.

'This year, people around the world are joining together to demand action on the debt crisis. It’s the biggest global movement for debt justice since campaigners won $130bn in debt cancellation a generation ago.
We’ve just launched a new video explaining why action on debt this year is so urgent – and what changes we want to win together.'

🚨 Liberal green policies generate conservative backlash

In the Netherlands, the government’s ‘ecological transition’ plan follows a neoliberal agenda. Policies like ‘true pricing’ (e.g. carbon taxes) claim to tackle the climate crisis but shift the burden onto consumers, worsening inequality.

⚠️ Carbon taxes are regressive. Why should low-income households bear the cost of our economic systems?

A just transition must tackle economic insecurity & inequality alongside climate action. Social wellbeing and ecological objectives must go hand in hand.

💬 What do you think? What narratives should we build so they resonate with the majority of people who are living in precarious conditions?

"The idea that this is a way of taking on the for-profit food industry is an illusion. As I’ve noted, a great way to do that would be to introduce warning labels on unhealthy foods that actually show that they’re bad for you rather than just a neutral set of statistics. Warning labels wouldn’t restrict consumer choice, nor would they target only the poor. But the food industry is dead set against it and spreads propaganda to try to keep us from having more helpful nutrition labels. I’ve previously suggested another non-coercive way we could improve people’s ability to eat healthily: start public restaurants that offer 100 percent healthy options where people can eat for free. But RFK, Fetterman, and Congressional Republicans seem most intrigued by the idea that involves micromanaging the diets of the least well-off"

www.currentaffairs.orgLet Food Stamp Recipients Eat Whatever The Hell They WantTrying to force the poor—and only the poor—to eat healthily is intrusive and humiliating. If we’re going to restrict junk snacks, we should restrict them for everyone.
