www.idfa.nlThe Kiev Trial (2022) - Sergei Loznitsa | IDFA Sergei Loznitsa - 2022 - While searching the archives for his found footage film Babi Yar. Context (2021), Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa stumbled upon unique but forgotten film material of a criminal trial in Kiev in January 1946. In this prelude to the Nuremberg trials, 15 Nazis and Nazi sympathizers stood trial for crimes against humanity.As in his previous films, Loznitsa presents the material without commentary, and uses short intertitles to inform the viewer of the necessary facts. These harrowing texts describe the mass slaughter of civilians (including women, children and the elderly) in places such as Melitopol, Kodra and Raska. Also addressed is the bloodbath at Babi Yar, where 33,000 Jewish people were shot dead by the Nazis.The testimonies of witnesses and perpetrators are bone-chilling. One of the Nazis gives his reason for shooting children: “[They] were all running around.” The bloody history of Ukraine remains alarmingly relevant in the present day, and Loznitsa lets that bloody history speak loud and clear in The Kiev Trial.

Just watched Waters of Pastaza at #IDFA2022. A #documentary where Amazon children of the #Achuar community (Peru/Ecuador) use the jungle not only as a place to get their food from (coconuts, banana, fish, wild cucumbers) but also as their playground. They laugh, make their own toys and enjoy their surroundings. It seems idyllic. However, their village has electricity. And with that comes..... the #smartphone.

That was a nice conversation between guest of honour #LauraPoitras (USA) and artistic director IDFA Orwa Nyrabia (Syria) at Carré, Amsterdam about why Poitras in all her documentaries is focused on how politicians, tycoons and big institutions are manipulating or even abuse their power, especially done by her own US government.

Too bad though that during this interesting #Mastertalk the public wasn't allowed to ask her questions.

Net op #IDFA2022 de docu The river is not a border gezien. De jonge regisseur wilde het verhaal laten zien over een vergeten grensconflict tussen Senegal en Mauritanië in de periode 1989-1991. Aan de oevers van de grensrivier vertellen de slachtoffers en nabestaanden gruwelijke verhalen en welk trauma ze eraan overhielden. Veel slachtoffers (zwarte Mauritaniërs die door Arabische Mauritaniërs uit het leger gemarteld werden) vinden dat racisme een grote rol speelde.
