It's coming up to one year since I started the #IAmNotATaboo website.

Although it hasn't been easy to reach out to the voices I want to uplift, I'm still proud of what the website has achieved.

There are nine #blogposts on the site:
- My own, Peter J Fullagar (he/him), on #Section28
- Jordan Putman on being visible
- Vanesa Polastri on learning lessons
- Walton Burns on #autism
- Leticia Trower giving a message
- Lila Hartelius on thoughts from the closet
- Amanda Croft with a mother's perspective
- Matt Starr on #dyspraxia
- and a heartfelt account from an anonymous writer

To all who have contributed, I thank you completely. As you can see, it's not just #LGBTQIA+ stories I want to uplift; but different marginalised identities.

There is also a resources page with recommendations for reading and lesson material.

I am not a taboo - · I am not a taboo! blogBlogs to break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a more inclusive world relating to the English Language Teaching industry.

This #PrideMonth, I haven't posted a lot about my inclusive materials, and I haven't created a special Pride month discount.

Why?

Because celebrating and representing the #LGBTQIA community in #ELT materials should happen all year round. We exist all year round – we don't magically become superqueer in June. We're superqueer every day of the year.

However, if you work in ELT or #ESOL, #ESL or #TeachingEnglish, have you used inclusive materials at all?

My materials are not the only ones, of course – but heck, I should promote them more.

In my ELT shop, you'll find:

- a paid-for, downloadable pdf of Existence; eight LGBTQIA+ inclusive ELT resources ranging from CEFR A2 to C1, including Family units and A is for.

- a FREE guide to representing LGBTQIA+ identities in ELT.

- newer, paid-for resources including Under the scope and Circumstances.

- FREE resources including Homelessness and Respecting identity.

Are you ready to join the #IAmNotATaboo movement?

I am immensely grateful and deeply honoured to be able to present the latest blog post for #IAmNotATaboo.

'In the Closet with the Door Open' is a deeply honest and courageous piece by a member of our community. I'm so thankful that they have chosen to be so open.

The post sheds light on what it can be like for a member of the Queer community when circumstances make it difficult to live as authentically as we would like to be.

I urge you to have a read, and send some support and love to the contributor.

In the early 70s, we didn’t yet have the vocabulary to describe people like me. When I first learned the concept of boys and girls, I corrected people who mislabeled me. I'm so pleased to announce that as of today, I'm now a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (#CIEP).

It's taken a while to get here, but I'm so pleased to get recognition for the work that I love to do.

And to celebrate, I've made a new tagline to go with my website.

Many thanks to Teresa Bestwick at the TEFL Development Hub for putting my session up on the YouTube channel – just in time for #PrideMonth!

It seems like ages ago that we did this! And as an update, I say on the video that I can be found on FB and Insta – not the case anymore! I'm using hashtag#Mastodon as my main place, other than here on LinkedIn.

’Existence has lessons for a variety of needs and is ideal for any educator who wants to be more inclusive: its accessibility, relatability and community are a strong place to start – together.’ [Helen Slee, Voices 304]

‘Fullagar’s Existence is a significant step forward in ELT. It’s not just a language textbook; it’s a tool for fostering understanding, empathy and acceptance.’ [Romina Muse, IATEFL TEYLT Worldwide, Issue 1, 2025]

‘While the lessons clearly intend to fight against discrimination based on gender identities, gender expression and sexual orientation, by positively portraying LGBTQIA+ people, they also fight against racism, ageism and ableism, by usualising (Sanders, 2021) marginalised groups so that they are embedded in regular didactic proposals and their worth can be recognised.’ [Vanesa Polastri, Argentinian Journal of Applied Linguistics, 12.2, 2024]

Need I say more?

Existence: available as paid digital download from my website or as physical book from The Bournemouth English Book Centre (BEBC).

The ILGA Rainbow Map for 2025 is out, and I've noted down a few UK facts.

If you don't believe how far the UK has fallen in terms of protections for LGBTQIA+ people in the country, then you need to read this.

Peter J Fullagar - LGBTQIA+ champion | DEI in ELT consultant | ELT editor/writer · ILGA Rainbow map 2025 - Peter J FullagarI am disgusted, yet not surprised.

Recently, I've taken it upon myself to try to influence the English language teaching industry to take a stand to represent and support the #LGBTQIA community.

I started an open letter, and gathered over 300 signatures from those within the industry, to try to urge organisations to take a stand.

I then emailed nine organisations at the beginning of April – to which I received one reply (the one that I thought would reply, as they do a lot of work on socials in support of the community).

One of my friends and colleagues nudged another organisation called NATECLA, and today they responded publicly.

Change starts from within.

#EnglishLanguageTeaching #ELT #ESOL #RepresentationMatters #IAmNotATaboo

(Alt description was too long: here's the end of it:

We are more than happy to sign this open letter. We’d also encourage our members and others who work within the sector (and Adult Education more generally) to do so.)

I may have been on a short hiatus, but I am not a taboo! is still here!

Initially, #IAmNotATaboo started off as solely representing #LGBTQIA identities – but in reality, all marginalised identities should be a part of I am not a taboo!

And I'm really pleased that Matt Starr agreed to write a #BlogPost about #Dyspraxia – it doesn't get talked about enough, and hardly ever (if ever) features in #ELT materials – so deservedly has a place under the I am not a taboo! umbrella.
