Hidden Gem that You Probably Missed

Caladrius Blaze is a shmup that was first released for arcades and later ported to the PC, PS3.

The gameplay feels smooth shooting thousands of bullets is always a good experiment for me.

The art style for it is deeply inspired by anime. The background environment and boss sprites looks gorgeous.

Stories are brief, yet enjoyable and create a nice world building. I find them quite immersive too.

The OST was simply an eargasm. It directly contributed to the game’s overall atmosphere.

One so-called negative aspect(s) I can think about this game is filled with fan service that has been directed to the men. This can be a dealbreaker for some, rightfully so. But for me, I do not mind them.

I deeply enjoyed playing it. Can recommend it if you want to play a high quality shoot em up.

A nonlocalized hidden gem

I guess I can say that PSP has quite a bit of hidden gems.

I always loved Musou/ Warriors games. The same goes for Tales of series too. Vesperia is my favorite. So combination of those two genre/games would definitely yield some amazing results and yes, it did. Tales of the Heroes: Twin Brave, is a great game.

Musou style gameplay (1 vs. 1000 men) mixes with RPG heavy style of Tales game effortlessly. The gameplay is fluid and enjoyable. Maps are much more condensed, and linear than the average Warriors/Musou and I think the game greatly benefits from it. Corridor like, linear paths offer much better experience than walking on an empty yet vast field.

Graphics of it is, incredible. Simply gorgeous. You sometimes ask yourself how could PSP had managed to handle it. Breathtaking. Simply stunning.

When it comes to plot, it is not a plot heavy game but the interaction between the characters, which is the staple of Tales series, is well constructed.

I wish this game have received an HD release for the modern platforms. Holly shit we consider PSP retro. How fast the time passes by.

You should definitely give it a chance. It will not disappoint.

Hidden Gem, Nostalgia

Some games simply feels nostalgic. I remember the days in which I have searched every inch of the internet just to play a single game. That game was Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral Town. Since then, I love Harvest Moon series, and more recently I got into Rune Factory and that solidified my attitude towards the farming/life sim genre.

Somehow, Innocent Life A Futuristic Harvest Moon always fall out of the radar for me. The cover art did nothing like the ones that I was familiar with. Much more melancholic, in a way. Single character standing on his bike while gazing silently to the audience.

Innocent Life is much darker game. The atmosphere for it feels heavier. The graphics compliments the general vibe of the game which is future, in which organic life stolen away from us. When you consider how much this game made me feel, you can easily say that I love the graphics and the atmosphere.

The gameplay is classic Harvest Moon, tile the land, water the seeds, harvest the product and sell them. It functions similarly to the previous iterations. Still quite enjoyable.

The soundscape of the game compliments the story rather elegantly. Few games can do it, and Innocent Life does not disappoint in that regard.

The game embraces isometric camera which is nothing to scoff at, but I would say I wish it embraced over the shoulder camera angle. I have only played it for the PSP, so maybe it is different for the PS2 version.

This game is a hidden gem, even though it is linked to such a huge franchise. Perhaps its deceptively unassuming cover art lead to such an underwhelming response. If that was the case would not be surprised.

Of course, I highly recommend it. I wish it had received a PC port. But it is easy to emulate title so you have the options.

Hidden Gem(s)

I will call this one hidden gem since it belongs one of the biggest gaming franchise.

Metal Slug 1st Mission is released for Neo Geo pocket, which feels much more platformer than a run and gun.

Graphics are amazing, and the gameplay is smooth, and spiced up with different vehicles.

The color palette can seem limited for some, but I think it is well utilized.

As a portable console game the speed of the game has drastically reduced compared to its arcade counterparts. However, for me this puts the game in a more unique place. Much more platforming as I mentioned before.

Hit boxes work quite effortlessly too.

Using the vehicles especially the plane is such a joy. It feels like a shmup. Which is great, I am quite a huge fan of shmups even though I suck at them.

Console limitations enable different creative expressions and Metal Slug 1st mission is one of them. Diverged from the main series still, it offered more platforming heavy experience.

One day, I was randomly navigating throughout the YouTube’s hellish maze and that is how I became aware of the Neo Geo Pocket.

This is the true joy of gaming sharing and talking about the hidden gems.

Metal Slug 1st Mission fits these criteria robustly.
