Follow-up to my recent post. I'm patting myself on the back and calling this one a win.
I emailed customer service and they confirmed that the airline indeed was preventing deaf people (and all other people with disabilities) from selecting seats, for fear that we might select a seat in an exit row.
I suggested that instead they require all customers who select an exit row to affirm that they are able and willing to operate the exit in an emergency. I also informed them that best practices are to ask a person if they can do a task, rather than just assume they are incapable.
They were appreciative of the input, and acknowledged that my suggestion was practical and aligned with best practices, and they would take it into account when improving their interface. They also acknowledged that "Just call customer service" was an accessibility failure in and of itself.
I don't get a lot of wins with this sort of thing, so I'm pretty pleased that this turned out well.
Hey everyone! I want to let you know that the #LondonDrugs store in Rutherford Mall in #Nanaimo has an amazing #AntiAbleist #inclusive manager. My friend, Tessie, is a #DisabledEmployee there. The manager, Warren, went out of his way to help her feel supported at work. He made her a shirt & a sign for her workstation
If you're on #VancouverIsland in the Nanaimo area, please support this specific store. Please let them know that the public appreciates how they treat their disabled employees & thank Warren for being a stellar, inclusive & thoughtful store #manager

When I bought a plane ticket and ticked the "Disability assistance - hard of hearing" box and then went on to seat selection, it offered to let my wife choose a seat (for a fee), but said that for me seat selection was "unavailable". When I went back and unticked the box, it offered to let us both choose a seat.
That seems odd. All I can think of is that maybe they didn't want me choosing an exit row, and went overboard? Why are deaf people not allowed to choose their seats?
ok maybe i should give yall a proper intro on me #introduction

I'm a fairly recent UK based hearing aid wearer and have only just discovered, through chatting on lemmy, that cinemas can, and sometimes do, show films with subtitles.

Q for #Deaf and #HardOfHearing folks who cannot listen to music or podcasts:
What are your methods for helping you to fall asleep? Are there other senses or activities you engage in order to prevent your mind from being busy?
sometimes I wish it was possible to be like Hoshi Sato, just picking up entire languages in a couple days
I always watch stuff with subtitles bc I have some minor auditory processing issues¹
lately I've been watching a lot of dubbed² stuff³ and it's been really fascinating seeing the differences between the dubs and the subtitles meant as a translation for the original language
I mean, it's similar to the way subtitles meant for #Deaf and #HardOfHearing viewers are sometimes slightly off from what was said (which is an #accessibility issue)
#disability #AuditoryProcessingDisorder #linguistics
¹ it's worst over the phone, which is fun since that's my whole job, or if I otherwise can't see the person who's speaking, which sometimes happens in TV/movies
² I finished #Ranma12 and started #ExtraordinaryAttorneyWoo
³ or, in the case of #StopHibariKun, both an anime and a manga with fan translations by different people

DigitA11y is my passion business which I hope to help small businesses and companies to become more accessible. I will also do community building to empower #ddbhh ( #Deaf #DeafBlind #HardOfHearing ) and #APD (Auditory Processing Disorder) in #Canada (mostly #BritishColumbia).
It is a long journey to go!

Just went to the movies for the first time in years (saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice). I usually avoid the theaters because they’re not very accessible for me due to my deafness/hard of hearing, but we had a gift card, so whatever.
When we got to the theater, my boyfriend asked if they had any accessibility devices for me (doesn’t hurt to ask). GQT should be advertising this on their website - they had the closed caption console that you put into your cup holder and it worked flawlessly for me. I was actually able to enjoy the movie to the fullest. If you are like me and need closed captioning to enjoy movies - check out GQT theaters if there’s one near you - they may have these too!
Also - this may be a controversial opinion but I certainly thought the sequel was better than the original :3
All government institutions, #NHS types, even specific charities, set up solely for #deaf and #hardofhearing people...
"Thank you for your email, instead of giving you the answer to your question or making an appointment via email, the medium you have chosen to contact us by, we would like to TELEPHONE you, a medium which relies entirely on HEARING to discuss your HEARING RELATED PROBLEM WITH YOU!"
