A quotation from Robert Ingersoll

On every hand are the enemies of individuality and mental freedom. Custom meets us at the cradle and leaves us only at the tomb. Our first questions are answered by ignorance, and our last by superstition. We are pushed and dragged by countless hands along the beaten track, and our entire training can be summed up in the word –suppression. Our desire to have a thing or to do a thing is considered as conclusive evidence that we ought not to have it, and ought not to do it. At every turn we run against cherubim and a flaming sword guarding some entrance to the Eden of our desire. We are allowed to investigate all subjects in which we feel no particular interest, and to express the opinions of the majority with the utmost freedom. We are taught that liberty of speech should never be carried to the extent of contradicting the dead witnesses of a popular superstition. Society offers continual rewards for self-betrayal, and they are nearly all earned and claimed, and some are paid.

Robert Green Ingersoll (1833-1899) American lawyer, agnostic, orator
Lecture (1873-12) “Individuality,” Chicago Free Religious Society

- All the group bullshit can happen even in where everyone knows about the group bullshit. , group-based identities, status games, ingroup favoritism, derogation, seeking by attacking outgroup members, etc... it all happens here.

(Again, I don't think it happens as much as in conservative spaces, and it doesn't seem to be the unspoken, universally-approved structure of how everything works, as it is in some other spaces, but none of us are immune)

Listen, fellow progressives/liberals: it's hard to swallow (I know because it's me) but identifying as a member of the side of the culture war that identifies #authoritarianism, #conformity, #groupthink, #tribalism, etc. doesn't mean we're immune to those things. Not in the least.

It also doesn't mean you know what "cognitive dissonance" or "fragile masculinity" actually mean, but maybe those are separate issues. The main point is: Physican Cure Thyself is something we should almost all be told on a regular basis.

There's a lot of debate in #auspol over the #welcometocountry and whether it should be said or not.

All I keep seeing is, "If you don't agree with me you're a nazi". People are pushing a false dichotomy and toxic politics again.
But they think it's ok because they are on the "right side".

It is #toxic politics.
It doesn't matter if you think you are right, stop playing their game, be better. Politicians want toxic #groupthink.

Everyone doesn't have to agree or they are [ad hominem here].

“We’re stepping into the most pro-growth, pro-business, pro-American administration I’ve perhaps seen in my adult lifetime,” gushed the hedge fund manager Bill Ackman in December...

“You don’t get fired for being bullish, but you do get fired for being bearish on Wall Street,” said Berezin.

- I agree that:
- the fundamental question might be of almost existential importance to organised groups, and humans who wish to form and maintain them.
- finding common ground is essential, as is nurturing empathy in all parties.

- I sumbit that:
- enquiring minds might enjoy examining the findings (or what we might divine of them, for such firms, if they have any sense, have long since obfuscated their work) of Cambridge Analytica and their ilk: research.bangor.ac.uk/portal/f although please note that state-of-the-art circa 10 years ago may now be old hat.
- theologans are a fine source of information regarding tried-and-tested methods of creating inclusive "in-groups".
- lesser groups that depend upon cohesive thinking like cults, militaries, resistance or political groups, corporate entities, and so forth, are all worthy of consideration too. The real nuggets of gold are finding the "happy-clappy" groups that manage to absorb & bestow happiness upon their adversaries. Not sure where one finds such groups though (outside mathstodon.xyz obviously).

- I'd love to know if anyone has come across any "threads" that are interesting to pull at, or salient web-search terms that are a good start, in reading about such things.
- I'd be curious to know how folks (eg in NATO, CCP, etc) taking high-level geopolitical perspectives might view this problem.
