Good day!

I love hiking when there are clouds.

They change the landscape beneath them with shadows that roam.

I like to roam, which means they’re the kind of shadows I want walking with me.

And leaving the other shadows in my life behind is why I hike.

The view looks down a steep slope and over trees far below at a narrow valley where a stream meanders. All around are wooded mountains, the clouds turning them light and dark in unusual places. The sky is mostly cloudy.

Not exactly what you expect to find in the forest…

I live for exploring, someone who becomes a risk taker to make a discovery. Exploring an old ski area wasn’t high risk, but I hiked a long way to get there.

Another day of not reaching 70F (21C).

Went on this absolutely SICK train ride a few weeks ago, the path goes through some swamplands. Turns out this photographer knew it was coming and was taking pictures of us! hah!

These are the mountains I see each day, but viewed from the opposite side. It’s also a rare glimpse of the third river that enters town.

So, yesterday’s hike…

As forecasted, it started out cloudy w/some drizzle. As NOT forecasted, the clouds disappeared. It turned hot with minimal shade.

Don’t trust forecasts.

There were great experiences, & I returned with enough time to edit a chapter.

Flowering plants overwhelm the border between the trail and the drop into the valley. There are a few conifers straight ahead where the trail turns to the right. In the distance is a wooded ridge. The sky is cloudy.

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. – There are few better ways to spend a summer evening than experiencing community while embracing nature. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites women in the Kansas City region to attend Ladies Night Out: Adventure Under the Sky, a free evening of outdoor activities from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 15, at Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center in Blue Springs.

Registration is not required for this free, walk-in event. Ladies ages 16 and older may come and go throughout the two-hour window to participate in as many activities as time allows. For more information, visit the following link: https://mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/207021

MDC staff and volunteers will have a variety of stations set up for attendees to enjoy. Activities include kayaking, Dutch oven cooking, atlatl, archery, fire starting, air rifle shooting, natural rope and soap making, identification and use of wild edibles, and more. MDC will provide all supplies and equipment needed for each activity.

Participants should wear closed-toed shoes and bring a water bottle with them. The nature center building will remain open for restroom access.

I’ve been pushing myself relentlessly while editing, but today I take to the trail. It’ll be hot in the late afternoon, which is why I go early.

We’re also, supposedly, to receive rain later in the week. I’ll believe it when I see it.

A trail weaves its way through lush grass atop a high ridge amidst pine forest where the trees are spaced widely enough to enable seeing a fair distance through them. Where the trail makes its first turn, a fallen tree blocks the way. Thanks to sunlight, the grass is a bright green that contrasts with the dark trees.

We're used to Coast Guard helicopters flying over us here, but this water bucket that flew over during our beach walk brought back memories of smoky summers and wildfire evacuations!

There’s nothing scary in the dark forest. Right?

Then again, I’ve always had an affinity for enclosed spaces, like those I’d hide in when I was little.

Ah, the trail of memories. It fuels my writing. Funny how, to ease some memories, I take to the trail.
