Finally finished Gentleman Jack and I gotta say, season 2 wasn't nearly as good as season 1, unfortunately. 😬

I know you can't divide Anne Lister from politics and social and class issues, but somehow the first season handled the entire mix of it much better.

I still love Suranne Jones as Anne though. Maybe season 3 would've brought it back, but now we'll never know. #GentlemanJack

TODAY IN QUEER TV HISTORY

The wonderful BBC/HBO series GENTLEMAN JACK had its U.S. premiere on today's date in 2019.

This entertaining, well-made show puts a gender-nonconforming lesbian front and center. The scripts are based on the life and diaries of Anne Lister (1791-1840).

This was the BBC's second dramatization of Lister's diaries in less than a decade (the first being a 2010 TV movie called THE SECRET DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER).

The show Gentleman Jack brought many people around to Team Lister. I myself was a bit concerned at how enthusiastically Lister pursued Miss Walker's money as well as her person.

Turns out that Miss Walker was not the only lover whose fortune Anne Lister eyed thoughtfully. Eliza Raine came first.

Raine, like Walker, also ended her days in an asylum, and was put there with Lister's support. LIster then proposed herself to manage Raine's estate.

So excited for the #LesbianHistoricMotifProject podcast to present this interview with Jill Liddington to talk about all things Ann Lister, and her new book As Good As A Marriage!

Liddington's earlier book, Female Fortune inspired the tv series #GentlemanJack. The new book looks at the first 2 years of the Lister/Walker marriage.
