Today I just released another episode of The Bryce podcast! In this episode, I talked about the Baofeng BF-FHP Pro seventh generation 8 W radio. It's a fun little radio that goes from VHF to UHF, and has a wide range even as far as 520 MHz. I talk about my use of the radio, and things I transmit and listen to with the radio. I even did a little demonstration of it by turning it on, and punching in some frequencies on the keypad. Lastly, I discussed about the lack of voice prompts in the menu settings, as the radio reads a lot of other stuff, but not the menu which is a problem. This radio can also tune in air band, which most models can't. There's no headphone jack, which most models don't have to begin with. So give this new episode a listen!

How to get a GMRS license.

1. Register for a 10-digit FCC Registration Number (FRN).
2. Log in to the Universal Licensing System (ULS).
3. Select "ZA – General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)" from the drop-down list.
4. Answer all the application questions and sign the application.
6. Pay the application fee. A GMRS license in the United States is $35. This fee is valid for 10 years.
7. Wait for the FCC to grant your license.

This huge #GMRS repeater network has been force unlinked by the owner because someone local went and threw a fit. So the repeater network that could go sometimes up to 200mi can now only go maybe 10 to 20 on a good day. I can't hit it hardly anymore. :(

MURS (Multi-Use Radio Service), CB (Citizens Band) and FRS (Family Radio Service) do not require a FCC license.

But GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), HAM (Amateur Radio Service) and LMR (Land Mobile Radio) do require a FCC license.

Usually any device that transmits at 4 watts or higher requires coordination (and, thereby, licensing) by the FCC.

I just took my Baofeng radio 2 walkie-talkie #GMRS channel 15, which is 462.575 MHz. Why, cause I'm a bad ass that's why. I used my other little FRS walkie-talkie too record on my PC. Towards the end, you can tell the walkie-talkie that was used to record was getting ready to die unfortunately. By the way, the model I used is the BF-F8HP Pro seventh generation, which claims to send out a whopping 8 W power output.

i know september is #preparedness month here in the US but i tend to go over my car kits and my storm kit at the end of the year instead. i'm glad i did because a lot of things need replacing. i also need to completely re-do my #gmrs and #ham radio strategies since i've shelved those for so many years.

A de-centralized, federated network, using a common, NON-COMMERCIAL, #FOSS protocol, such as the #fediverse can actually save lives and fight the onslaught of dezinformatsiya.

#Meshtastic #GMRS devices were used to keep people connected, sending messages through #ActivityPub based clients, during catastrophic weather events which knocked standard comms networks down.

#DTBO socmedia (such as #BlueSky, #Threads, #Telegram, etc) were actively used to disseminate #dezinformatsiya, during those catastrophic events, and other emergencies.

Taking the internet back from walled-garden, corporate, proprietary networks can mean the difference between life or death for many.

Government should not be owned, operated or focused on corporations, but be by People, for People.

Just an FYI that GMRS is longer range than FRS and a GMRS license covers a household.

Yesterday I gave my wife my spare #gmrs radio and showed her how to use it so that we can communicate if we're in a general vicinity and cell service is down. I programmed both radios with DCS on a channel labeled SMPLX in memory. I also explained that this is not for private conversations but is intended for use if we are out somewhere and need to keep in touch for any reason.

I also intend to explain how she can use my amateur handheld in the event of an immediate threat to life and I am unable to press the button for any reason.

This is totally not doomer prepper "zombie apocalypse" bullshit advice. This is instead advice for any kind of SHTF scenario that is plausable. Hurricanes, earthquakes, major disasters, etc.

i am ZERO fun for a road call catchup today though because i finally tore my desk down!

and pulled out two thunderbolt docks, four computers four displays one soundbar two audio breakouts one eGPU RX, 19 external drives (nvme/sata/tb/mag) 2 UPS, 2 macbook stands 2 mics 2 headphones one radio scanner that is blowing up tonight because some family has joined the ranks of #GMRS households.

i am an avid listener, but people legitimately call my house by radio. they're children BUT could be you!

Equipment get: #GMRS radio! It's.... a rip-off Baofeng, naturally (well it's not, it's literally a Baofeng, just locked to GMRS-only TX without, presumably, either the special 3-finger salute or the special 2-byte-codeplug-change.)

Second attempt though, first one was marketed as a GMRS radio, had the amazon listing that said GMRS radio... and it was an amateur HT, even printed next to the screen, in the Amazon listing images.

Don't trust Amazon listings to be accurate. (Also don't trust NotARubicon's descriptions to be accurate either, but, y'know, I doubt that's a surprise)
