#FrameworkLaptop

Finally pulled the trigger on a @frameworkcomputer Laptop 16 after thinking about it for far too long.

And now to start preparing my Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 for sale. Even though its specs are so much better than the Framework 16, it's so much more difficult to even just swap out the SSD that it's laughable. So instead of a paltry 16GB RAM on an amazing processor, it's time to grab 96GB RAM on the Framework (and probably watch them announce a refresh 3 days after I receive mine).

I don't want to ever need to go through the absolute hell trying to get this Galaxy Book open ever again after this.

And of course, it'll be running my current obsession, NixOS, let's gooooo.

oh my god, finally a good video review on the framework laptop 12. this goes for the cheapest one you can make, so diy, i3 model, bring your own ssd and ram. everything i could find was about the i5 so far.

anyway. i'm sold. i'm gonna get one! :3

Framework 12 first impressions (mostly very rambly):

I really like how it looks and the build quality seems pretty good as well! I got the DIY version and putting it together took like five minutes, was super super easy and definitely worth saving some money and bringing my own storage and stuff. Trackpad and keyboard are fine, obviously the trackpad is nowhere near as nice as the one on my MacBook, but it's pretty good and the keyboard is definitely very nice and it has way more travel than what I would have expected (even though it took me a bit to get used to it for some reason, I feel like the keys are spaced a bit differently?). I am a huge huge fan of the two physical switches at the top of the screen for the camera and microphone! And I like that the Windows logo is not a Windows logo but a Framework logo! (for the Super key)

There was a lot of talk about the screen being pretty poor and while it's not great (*especially* compared to the MacBook haha) it's way more than serviceable. From the reviews I had thought it would be really bad, but I honestly didn't even notice until I looked at a "proper" screen again—and even then, the Framework 12 isn't terrible at all either.

Got Fedora 42 with KDE running perfectly, worked out of the box with no issues. Performance in general seems to be about on par with what I expected, I certainly haven't felt like it was *slow* by any means (and I have the i3 version) but my standards may also just be very low :gphn_lol_sweat:

It has been getting quite warm quite quickly (unless you put it into power save mode) and if you tend to use your laptop on yor lap I feel like it may get uncomfortable after not too long, depending on what you're doing. But I also have to say that it's currenty 35°C-ish in my apartment and that probably doesn't help with that either. The fans are pretty quiet though at least!

The speakers are... serviceable. You can definitely watch YouTube videos or a show or movie, but I would not want to use them for listening to music. They also don't get particularly loud either.

Touchscreen and tablet mode work perfectly as well on Fedora KDE. Automatically detects when you have it in the tablet or tent mode and even plops up an on-screen keyboard as well so that's very nice.

I'm spending so much of my time right now looking at Framework laptops when I already have a Galaxy Book 5 Pro 360 that I'm quite happy with (though the speakers don't currently work under Linux). The big limitation for my on the Book 5 Pro 360 is that it has non-expandable 16GB of RAM and I find that a bit... restrictive though it has served me well for most of my time using it.

I can probably sell the Book 5 and get most of my money back for it and put that towards the Framework. I know it will be a step down in many areas, but... I just believe in Framework's mission and in full Linux compatibility that I can't get away from wanting it. Seems like NixOS runs well on them as well, which is my main interest and goal.

Someone local was selling their Framework but when I got in touch with them they told me they weren't going to be in the city until mid August. So why put your ad online right before you leave?

Anyways, I'm almost certain I will end up ordering a Framework at some point in the very near future.

While we're talking about Framework here... can we get a bezel in blue at some point? Feels so odd to have green, lavender and red but no blues.

Mmmm. Framework are giving me the run around with sending me a replacement keyboard for my laptop. My delete key stopped working properly a while back. Other early adopters have had similar problems: community.frame.work/t/broken-

They're saying I'm outside their 1-year warranty so I have to buy my own replacement keyboard. USD$80 delivered.

Australian consumer guarantees beg to differ. Hopefully they do the right thing.

Framework Community · Broken delete key - like literally stopped workingThe delete key on my laptop stopped working for no clear reason. All the other keys are fine, it’s just the delete key that doesn’t work. When it first stopped working, I could bend the case a bit to get it to restart; now that doesn’t work at all. Does anyone have any suggestions or should I just by a new input cover or something?

So, my #FrameworkLaptop does this weird thing where if I enable the Plymouth boot splash screen, it boots 10-12 seconds slower than without a boot splash. And I can't make sense of it.

systemd-analyze blame tells me plymouth-quit-wait.service stays in the "activating" phase for ~12 seconds. Searching online revealed that it might not actually be Plymouth, but something Plymouth is waiting on to wrap up.

What doesn't make sense to me is why it would make any difference at all whether Plymouth is or isn't part of my initrd. And I'm a bit stumped how to figure out what causes it to hang for that long. Because my desktop PC also has Plymouth enabled and doesn't have this issue.

I would really appreciate some pointers because I'm at a loss how to troubleshoot this :drgn_flat_x_x:

this might age like milk, but i have a feeling that #framework is eventually going to do a total 180 with the #framework12. their targets right now, are schools and students, but i genuienly believe that they might be surprised by who actually ends up buying this thing and what they want from it.

i expect to see much higher end part becoming available for this thing as soon as its next generation, honestly. they may have underestimated how many people would want a cute, fun looking, small repairable laptop. we'll see.

i'm still really tempted by the #framework12, in the end. i feel like all of the things i worry about are also things i can put up with. do i need a super color accurate display for what is going to be a writing and web browsing machine that i take everywhere with me? probably not. do i need it to be super powerful, too? no, i'll have a full on desktop pc to handle that kind of workload.

it's a stupid thing and i'm gonna be honest, it's very me and totally unimportant... but it's a small, boxy, repairable, purple linux laptop. i can't even explain why i want this so badly but i do and i've been saying i wanted a purple laptop for years. this thing feels like it was made for me.

and with the quite frankly astounding track record of framework, while usually i wouldn't be willing to buy and hope for the best later, i think i could do this here. with how easy this screen is to repair and how big of a complaint it is, they're bound to tweak that in a new generation (like they did for the 13 actually).

so, i'm still unsure but... yeah, i can't help but be a bit blindly in love with this laptop. :|

so, the #frameworklaptop12 reviews are out and i'm happy with everything i see except one big thing... the display. 66% cover of the sRGB standard is, let's just say "painful". for everything else, i like it better than my current 13 but that display is kind of killing me.

i'm not expecting a super color accurate display or whatever but i'm quite sensitive to stuff like that. it sucks even more because i would've been interested in using this thing to draw with it with the stylus and the lack of color accuracy is a big issue here. i'm hoping that eventually, a new screen will be rolled out and will be available as a replacement, that is the framework way after all, but still, that is a big "if"...

also, i hear that there is some thermal issues and i've kind of associated "intel laptops" with "hot laptop and loud ass fans", which is a huge no no for me....

i'm going to wait for more reviews, but yeah, i am not sure. it looks like my dream machine, it's so close, but it also feels so far. we'll see.
