Introduce students to Deren and experimental film with our Mini Discussion Guide for Meshes of the Afternoon. It makes a great bell ringer or classroom warm-up. You can also pair it with The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman for a full cross-media lesson. Great for creative writing, film history, film literacy, media literacy, ELA, and women’s studies classes. For grades 9+.

"You killed the Undergroundfilm or The Real Meaning of Kunst bleibt ... bleibt"
R.I.P. Wilhelm Hein
- underground filmmaker & no-bullshit critical mind, and a wonderful person and friend. I should make a collection of his best quotes, such as "optical printing was the death of underground film in the 1970s".
(He would have been my professor in the late 1980s/early 1990s if I hadn't chosen the more conventional academic route of university humanities - it was a privilege to become a small contributor to his & Annette Frick's projects later.)
I took the picture in 2022 when his health was already declining.
