And the culmination of today's little(!?) side-quest is I now have couple of USB-C/BarrelJack power adapters. One longer, one shorter.

The longer one is just as you last saw it, but I've made a more secure shorter one with the resistor(s) built in. As far as I can tell this works fine for both pulling 5V from a USB-C wall-wart as well as injecting voltage into my USB-C microcontroller boards (in which use case I've not yet looked into whether the resistors between GND and CC1/2 ought cause any issues, "working so far" is the situation.)

This is how I'll connect the solar panel to the remote board, but also useful at the test-bench per se.

Don't come crying to me if you try this and everything goes fizz-pop and bursts into flames. OK.

RIP a large chunk of today's TODO list. 📒 💀 ⚰️ 🪦

Does anybody have tips for finding 5mm DC jacks and sockets that are not crap? The first time I thought it was because I bought from AliExpress, but this time they’re both from Conrad and it’s the same shit: you look at it sideways and the connection is gone. There’s a 0.1 mm margin in depth and a milliradian margin in rotation where it connects, anything else and it’s an open circuit. #Electronics

Measuring voltage w/bad LEDs it's around 80vdc. Short around a bad LED and it drops to around 40-50vdc. The LED driver shows its output from 36-65vdc and 300mA. It would seem the driver is cranking things up to hit some level of current flow?

Good day and welcome to fun with white LED fixtures. Today we have two of them, one that’s dimly lit and another totally borked. Both can be semi-revived by shorting around a burnt out LED.
Most of these fixtures have all of the LEDs in series, which means if even one burns out the whole device quits working. Not a great design.

This is the underside of the Mac Studio's power supply. It's easily accessible, and gets removed right after the bottom cover, making replacement convenient.

We went against our instinct to poke around this electric city on the underside—the exposed electrical components and capacitors are...shocking. If you're working on a device with an internal power supply, hold it by the edges to avoid touching components.

German shipping has become really wild.
I ordered these probe kits a while ago, and today, they arrived like this.
The envelope torn (or cut?), the contents loose in my mailbox.
If it broke in shipping, why did both boxes arrive? It it was cut open by the German carrier, why didn't they take anything? No valuables identified?

Weird.
Anyway: Beware of shipping. Check and document your parcels upon arrival.

All 50 U.S. states have now introduced right-to-repair legislation, aiming to empower consumers and repair shops by allowing them access to the necessary tools and information to fix their devices. This movement seeks to challenge manufacturers' control over repairs, promoting sustainability and reducing electronic waste. Advocates argue that consumers should have the right to repair their own products without facing restrictions from companies.
