RantingCanuck<p>More and more I'm coming to the conclusion that <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/electoralreform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>electoralreform</span></a> isn't enough under the Westminister system used in <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> and that the system itself needs to be completely reformed because it puts party interests ahead of the peoples interests.</p><p>My proposal is as such this:</p><p>1) We move from an appointed cabinet to an elected cabinet, with an annual election (held on the same day each year with that day being a statutory holiday) to selected 1/5 of cabinet. Cabinet members do not get a vote in the House.</p><p>2) We replace the elected House of Commons with a randomly drawn one (drawn by province). The random draw would ensure that the House is reflects the current demographics of Canada. 1/5 of the House is replaced every year.</p><p>3) We replace the appointed <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Senate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Senate</span></a> with an elected one but bar political parties from participating. M. Grégoire<p>Fixed-date elections are a bad idea for a parliamentary system. I understand the idea is that it's fairer to opposition parties by taking the power to call an election out of the hands of the government. But what really happens is that, because they know the precise election date, parties are tempted to begin campaigning earlier and earlier, to get the jump on their competitors.
