Twine & Markdown

I'm working on my Fall ACTEM presentation. The presentation is on "Choose Your Own Adventure: Create An Adventure for Your Students". Specifically, how you can create these for students. Or, better yet, how students can create these.

While working in Twine (I wrote about Twine previously), I wrote some things in Markdown. Since Twine doesn't have a "viewer" window, p

Frayer Model

I've long been a fan of the Frayer Model. This is an easy to use, flexible graphic organizer that can help students understand concepts. It is most commonly used for vocabulary words, but can be extended as well.

The wonderful Alice Keeler posted a hint to create Frayer Models using Google Slides. This then reminded me of a Frayer Models in Moodle. I posted this several y

Forgot to share my #Eduglow this week. Kids are just lovely sometimes. This glorious moment comes to you courtesy of a frequently-disengaged pupil I managed to charm last year:

“Miss! You’re a brilliant teacher! I’m finding atomic structure revision with my new teacher so easy!”

I told her “Actually no, Lyla, you’re finding it easy because you’re really clever and a great scientist.”
Maybe she will believe it, because she trusts me.

Today’s #EduGlow Two of my Y10 chemists came in and sang a song of their own composition to me, a capella, standing round a lab bench. Haunting, raw with emotion. Sent shivers down my spine! Gorgeous moment. Makes all the shit from SLT worth it.*

*some of the shit. there’s a lot.

I've made it through another half term - a long, dark, difficult - half term. But there's been lots of good stuff too. A student who painted something amazing for me to pass onto an absent colleague. My Yr 11s bringing in props and costumes to film revision material for one of our texts. Fighting for a dyslexia screening, and ultimately a diagnosis, for a Yr 9 boy who didn't understand why school was so tough for him. And now - wine and sleep @edutooters

Study State:

"Hi, I'm a 17-year old senior in high school with a passion for frontend web development. Out of frustration with Quizlet's high cost, I created StudyState in October 2022 as a free alternative with additional features. I had a lot of fun creating it (especially the AI-powered stuff!), and I hope you enjoy using it!"

How about this for an #EduGlow?

Y9 lad in retracking (discipline stage between senior detention and suspension) wanders in to my classroom at break, bored. We start talking about what he should be doing.
Haven’t you got a book to read?
No, I don’t like reading.
What do you like?
History.
What period?
Second World War.
All right, try this. [Adolphus Tips by Michael #Morpurgo] You might find it a bit soppy but I love it.

(An hour later)
Miss, can I take that book home tonight? I like it.

Ooh! and a lovely thing happened to me today. Caught up with a Y10 former pupil in the corridor, asked him if a certain wee lass in my Y7 class with a similar look and the same name was his sister. “Yes miss, and I’m really happy she’s got you.” What a compliment. 😊😊😊😊 #EduGlow

Well, 2 #EduGlow moments today on the first day of my first summer term as an Actual Grownup Teacher.

1 A pupil came out to me - not in confidence or anything “just wanted to check you knew” 🥰🌈 It must be so hard to say it not knowing what judgement there might be.

2 One of my Y10s, who often finds school quite unpleasant and overwhelming, improved by 70% in her factual recall retest! We’ve been practising and she has been working so hard, but WOW!! SEVENTY! I am super proud!
