Earl Hines - Tour de Force

Like it says on the tin.

I remember Dad had a bunch of Earl “Fatha” Hines LPs that I’ve been unable to locate - I used to play these all the time as a kid.

Hines is a pretty remarkable pianist.

This was a used bin pick-up VMP pressing. Not a great pressing, but the problems are fleeting when they occur.

"Earl Hines was one of the most revolutionary piano stylists of the 20th Century, bridging the gap between ragtime and the New Orleans style of Jelly Roll Morton, the stride piano of James P. Johnson and Fats Waller and the modern sounds of Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Bill Evans and others." (1)

Uh-huh.

#Jazz #accordion is kind of a late-bloomer, where the instruments were at the birth of jazz in the 1890s, but not up to a lot of the music people wanted to play, beginning with the blues

Today a good accordion has the capability to do quite a lot in good hands, but there’s reasons it wasn’t the bigger part of the jazz story 😥

That and my perennial wish we had more recordings from Alice Hall, or any by Julie Gardner (with #CharlieParker #DizzyGillespie and #EarlHines!) 😢🪗
