Day 11: A drama that kept you riveted
Easy: both #Enigma and #KisekiDearToMe.

In Enigma, the mystery kept me hooked, though the characters also held my interest.

In Kiseki: Dear to Me -- while there are mystery... components, it's not a mystery plot. It's more like they're trying to figure different things out at points.

But, really what hooked me was how all of the relationships (platonic and otherwise) were developed. And how all the conflicts that had happened would play out.

Day 10: Did you rewatch a drama in 2023?
Funny you should ask. I just mentioned it.

Actually, I sort of rewatch all the shows I watch. As in, I'll go back and rewatch some of my favorite moments. Myeol Mang tormenting that terrible father never gets old, for example.

As for rewatching a whole series, beginning to end? Less frequent. This year, however, I did rewatch Manner of Death with @norgralin . (It was also his first BL, Thai or otherwise.)

Day 9: A drama from another year you watched in 2023

I went into 2020's Manner of Death expecting one thing. Thought I was getting another, and then realized I was getting exactly what I wanted.

#MaxTul's chemistry is, as usual, off the charts. Potentially dangerous and absolutely smitten is a good role for Max, and I hope he has more chances to explore that and other archetypes, despite Tul leaving the industry.

*coughs* you saw nothing, this is totally on time...
Day 19: A drama that made you laugh.

Most dramas make me laugh. They're emotionally varied that way.

But the one that comes immediately to mind, is #OhNoHereComesTrouble for its consistently sharp humor. With timing, physical acting, and great lines, it's the funniest drama I saw in 2023.

Honorable mention goes to #KinnPorsche for Porsche being a complete and utter gremlin.

Day 31: Favourite drama of 2023?

Limiting it to 2023 dramas that I saw, I will pick "Destined with You."

I love the high contrast of physical comedy with serial killers - when it's done well. I love trying to figure out the mystery - even if I have to suffer while waiting for the past lives to be revealed. I loved the symbolism & the cinematography.

But probably the thing that made it the best for me was viewing it via a watchparty with new kDrama friends from Mastodon (Fediverse) that I made this year. They caught things I didn't, gave me different perspectives, & made me LOL a lot. The joint viewing was the icing on the cake that made this drama my favourite of the 2023 dramas I saw.

Day 31: Favourite drama of 2023

Lighter & Princess

My first review of it:
tech.lgbt/@jillithd/1100973093

Wow, I think this was one of my favorite cdramas EVER. Seriously. It is so well done. The acting from being freshmen in college, to seniors in college, to late 20s adults really shows the difference in their hair, clothing, personalities. For 36 episodes, it didn't feel like any of it was filler. Each character was multi-faceted, with no true all-good or all-evil. Great chemistry between the leads. Great storytelling on multiple plot lines of how the naivety and optimism of youth can diverge as success enters the picture. Great discussion of discrimination against people with criminal backgrounds re-entering society. And profitability of sexism?

Day 30: Was 2023 a good rama year for you?

The *** best *** so far!!!!
(Since it's my first full year being a kDrama fan - it's easy to say it's the best)

What's great about kDrama?

1) kDrama has been shown to be good for depression

2) A great kDrama (& other Asian drama) community in the Fediverse (Mastodon)

3) Great art leads to more great art - dramas/film led to music

4) Learned to cook some Korean dishes

5) Started learning the Korean language

Day 28: Something you want to see in more dramas?

Getting up there in age makes me want to see more older characters dealing with what life has thrown at them, in relationships, friendships, work & career, those moments that make you stop & evaluate where you've been & where you're going & whether it's worth it.

In some dramas, the side characters sometimes deal with one or two of these things. But life hits hard later & it would be interesting to see the kDrama world address that.

Day 27: A 2023 drama too few people watched?

Of the ones I watched, I don't think enough love was given to "Our Blooming Youth" - great mystery & great acting.

But I did notice several here on the IMDB top ratings that I haven't even seen yet! More for the plan-to-watch list!!

Day 30: Was 2023 a good drama year for you?

But, of course!
I started out the year as a person who had avoided all TV for 14 years. I was quite happy with thatI had no cable or streaming. However, several folks here on Mastodon made reference to K-drama and in April of this year, I saw an invite to a weekly #watchparty. I enjoyed watching with a group. By early July, I had 2 streaming services, started bingeing, and learning 한글. Obsessed now.

Day 30: Was 2023 a good drama year for you?

Yes

I joined Mastodon full-time in November of last year and have truly enjoyed the community here over the last 14 months. The intelligent, thoughtful, welcoming, nerdy, silly, hornball #kdrama #cdrama #ThaiDrama community here has made this a place I look forward to checking every day. (The #kpop fans, too, of course!)

Did I know who Wang Yibo was a year ago? Did I know who Namkoong Min was a year ago? Did I know who Bright or Win were a year ago? They are now all actors at the top of my list for watching whatever next series comes out that they star in. And I was introduced to them by the community here.

This community literally spans the globe. Their points of view and day-to-day thoughts help me be a better and more thoughtful human.

Thank you. 💖

Day 29: a 2024 drama you are excited for
2 of 2 - Movies

Alienoid 2: Return to the Future starring Kim Woo-bin and Kim Tae-Ri! The first was such a fun movie and I even got to see it in a theater. Hopefully it will have an international release again?

Secret: Untold Melody a movie Doh Kyungsoo finished filming at the beginning of 2022 and it's release date keeps getting pushed. 💔 It is a remake of a Taiwanese movie.

A Killer Paradox (aka Murder DIEary) starring Choi Woo-shik

AND

Captivating the King starring Jo Jung-suk and Shin Se-kyung

AND

The Crown Prince Has Disappeared that SUHO just finished filming last week. His first sageuk! (I'm not counting "Sword of Aramun" as a sageuk.) Here's the only behind-the-scenes selfie he gave us from the set, so as to avoid spoilers.

Day 28: something you want to see in more dramas

For #CDramas - this may be controversial, but I am tired of seeing talentless traffic actors in dramas. There are talented ones, of course - I consider Xu Kai & Cheng Yi some of them, but there are some so bad and are given leading roles I get annoyed. Why? Because a lot of actors who are second leads are actually better actors. I pretty much dislike how the industry works at times.

Day 28: something you want to see in more dramas
Since I'm only watching #kdrama and at least 2/3s of them involve some sort of a romance, is it too much to ask that they include good kissing?!?! It would be challenging to choose a worst kiss. So many of them involve the leads just putting their lips in the same place, often while staring up at the sky! I can probably count a handful of good kisses in all of the shows that I've watched.
