Today we rode on the new not-yet-really-open East Don Trail, which is expected to be complete in September. It starts at the point where the Taylor Creek Trail splits off from the South Don Trail, following the train tracks north, past the golf course and emerging from the valley right at the Bermondsy Transfer Station, about 3.5km. This will eventually connect downtown to the Meadowlands trail that runs through the hydro fields right out to Scarborough.

It was a fun little ride. There is one place you have to carry your bike over train tracks because the tunnel is not yet built, and one place where you have to cross the river on a temporary bridge because the new one is not quite complete. All the other bridges are done, including a switchback structure to cross the train tracks by the golf course. The south end of the trail is not yet paved, so there are a few muddy puddle spots.

Today, Sheena Sharp, a candidate for the Toronto Don Valley West byelection, joined me on The Sami Parvez Show. We discussed last month's flooding in Toronto, environmental issues, the cost of living, the housing crisis, rise of crime rate, the carbon tax, and her goals for both Toronto and Ward 15. The interview will air tomorrow at 3 p.m. ET.

We're right at the northern end of their range here in #Toronto and the #DonValley used to be an industrial wasteland before several decades of intense rehabilitation and human intervention to fix what we'd done wrong. Both areas that I saw them in this weekend are heavily managed by the parks system to keep them clean and safe for animals. While the state of the world can be awful and scary, it's nice to have occasional reminders that human effort can be expended for good, too.

there's an occasional thunk as a log strikes the steel beams, but in this clip, all you can hear is angry water and crickets

Walkers are Welcome Town - Stocksbridge

Stocksbridge is situated, in the Upper Don Valley, some ten miles north of Sheffield City Centre. We are geographically isolated from neighbouring towns and cities.

On the edge of the Peak District National Park, the town centre is in a valley surrounded by beautiful countryside. The area offers many easy, safe and pleasant walking options.
