🎉 The magical #OCaml duo claims to outmaneuver a $359M juggernaut, because obviously two #wizards typing in their basement can easily outshine a #tech behemoth. 🤯 Apparently, open-sourcing and bootstrapping are the secret ingredients that make #investors question their life choices. 🙈

The faces of the NIH cuts - by Mickey Desruisseaux

Puppet Don's parasitic cronies & puppet masters breaking the law in two fundamental ways:

• The Administrative Procedure Act. By cancelling hundreds of grants based on the #heritageFoundation / #project2005 privatization-and-plunder agenda (cut public funding of anything benefiting the public — putting labels on the targets of needed resources such as #DEI, #transgender issues, #vaccineHesitancy) with zero scientific input, the #NIH did not even try to explain why a change in #medicalResearch priorities was justified.

• Constitutional violations. The cancellations are unconstitutionally vague. Researchers cannot decipher how they would need to modify further research studies to comply. Further, the grant cancellations violate constitutional separation of powers principles because they seek to override the requirements on NIH that are mandated by the sole authority to determine public spending: #Congress.

@jasongorman I accidentally learned about the “subsidized destruction of markets to enact a monopoly” strategy back in the 1990s. A friend of mine owned a photocopy shop (remember those?) in a small college town. Kinko’s came into town and offered copies for far less than it cost to make, eating the losses for as long as it took to kill off their competitors. My friend of course went out of business, and shortly after, Kinko’s raised their prices to much higher than his prices would have been.

After personally seeing that strategy in action, I now see it everywhere. Walmart did the same thing by killing off local stores. Amazon did it with online shipping. Every startup’s “disruption” strategy is basically this technique in disguise: Uber, AirBNB, and of course, AI. It’s all about destroying an industry in order to monopolize and enshittify it for profit.

Let's talk about why many innovation efforts fail.
It's often because people keep on doing the same old thing, following the same old ideas, chasing the same old goal that is now irrelevant, fighting among themselves in the same old way over the same old arguments, following the same old pattern of inaction.

Sounds about right.

I was reading a publication the other day while doing some research on another topic and came across this article, which got me thinking about this issue, which led to today's quote.

I quickly learned that the reason for this state of affairs in many organizations is due to what psychologists call "cognitive rigidity.' Let's dig in.

What is it?

Like a stubborn door that refuses to open, our minds can sometimes become locked in patterns that restrict our ability to see new possibilities and adapt to life’s ever-changing circumstances. This mental inflexibility, known as cognitive rigidity, can significantly impact our thinking and behavior, often without us even realizing it.

So why should we care?

But why should we care about cognitive rigidity? Well, in today’s fast-paced, ever-evolving world, the ability to adapt and think flexibly is more crucial than ever. Whether it’s navigating personal relationships, tackling workplace challenges, or simply trying to keep up with the latest technological advancements, a rigid mindset can leave us feeling left behind and ill-equipped to handle life’s curveballs.

What's the innovation angle?

Let’s start by demystifying this psychological concept. In formal terms, cognitive rigidity refers to a tendency to persist in a particular thought pattern or behavior, even when it’s no longer adaptive or beneficial. It’s like being stuck in a mental rut, unable to shift gears or consider alternative perspectives.

The article goes on to identify common traits with the mindset.

Difficulty in shifting attention or focus
Resistance to change or new ideas
Inflexible problem-solving approaches
Black-and-white thinking patterns
Struggle with ambiguity or uncertainty

Sounds like my "innovation killers" list which I so often share!
