Focusing on diplomatic practices is a common way to try to define #diplomacy – not only #earlymodern, but also modern diplomacy. This allows to understand #emdiplomacy not from preconceived ideas of what diplomacy ought to look like and thus maybe overlooking important aspects, but what diplomatic actors actually did.
So, we argue in our introduction: “understanding earlymodern diplomacy as a political and social practice helps to open up the varieties of what diplomatic actions could comprise – from negotiations to reporting and information-gathering to gift-giving, dancing and dining.”
