9/16/75 ace’s: the only dead version of mcdill & reynolds’ 1972 CATFISH JOHN, sung by garcia with old & in the way in 1973, now a somewhat metronomic 2-drummer reggae groove, handed over to the nascent jerry garcia band for “reflections.” could’ve easily stayed a dead tune, though, & can imagine the ‘80s dead playing this in 1st sets, probably slowing to sound more like ROW JIMMY. “that’s changing a little too erratically,” says garcia as it ends. #gd091675 #deadfreaksunite [2/2]

9/12/75 ace’s (maybe): took me way too long to realize that the piece tapers call NINES is the same as amazing 17-minute ORPHEUS on the “all good things” box, 3rd & final take, reviving spring piece, now with hart on 2nd drums. primo “blues for allah” era space ala KING SOLOMON’S MARBLES & SLIPKNOT! (which garcia almost has to stop himself from playing). chattering guitar/keys, opening to sparkling arpeggios. denouement like it’s going into COMES A TIME. #gd091275 #deadfreaksunite [2/2]

9/1/75 ace’s: 1st COMES A TIME on tape since ’72, revived for garcia’s solo LP in progress with new worked-out 2-guitar intro, alongside THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, dusted off in july at a slower tempo & played here. both songs lose something with 2 drummers to my ears, the bleak existential space of COMES A TIME & the bounce of THEY LOVE EACH OTHER (though that might be the tempo). #gd090175 #deadfreaksunite [2/2]

also: a loose version of THAT’LL BE THE DAY, perhaps inspired by hart’s crickets, or maybe (as hinted at by a giggling garcia) by the venue’s natural slapback echo. only dead version of keith & brian godchaux’s SHOWBOAT, probably performed by keith/donna/garcia/kreutzmann a few days earlier at keystone berkeley. “that’s neat, got any other ones?” garcia says after. would’ve made a great dead tune, perfect for kreutzmann’s country/jazz swing. #gd081275 #deadfreaksunite [3/3]

7/24/75 ace’s: another take of BO’S BLUES, the proto-type for the disco DANCIN’ IN THE STREET. a decent groove for interlocking garcia/weir/lesh weave, though maybe imagined more as chords for a song, instead of getting repurposed. sounds a bit like phish’s MOMA DANCE in places. #gd072475 #deadfreaksunite

7/23/75 ace’s: labeled BO’S BLUES, 7-minute instrumental built around the lick that will become the intro/between-verse section to the “disco” version of DANCIN’ IN THE STREET, not sounding so disco-y here. one drummer, & definitely lesh, but guitarists are either very well meshed or there’s no garcia. #gd072375 #deadfreaksunite
