Germany’s top diplomat in London has called on Britain to strike a customs union deal with the European Union.
Speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce on Thursday morning, ambassador Miguel Berger pointed to Turkey’s long-standing customs union with the EU as a potential model.

UK Home Secretary Yvette Cooper rules out a return to a full union with the bloc as Keir Starmer prepares for talks in Brussels this week.

Except for that thing which will actually take the brake off trade with our largest market.
If a government with a huge majority is too frit to take "tough decisions" that don't involve kicking not-well-off people when they're down you have to wonder what it's for.
These are generous offers from the EU.
If Starmer were, as he claims to be, laser-focused on growing the UK economy, he would start serious talks with the EU about them.
If, on the other hand, he remains ideologically wedded to a hard Brexit at all costs, then he won't.
I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Probably depends on what his sponsors think. You don't expect him to buy his own Taylor Swift concert tickets, do you?

@ChristieElanCane I beg to differ. Mr. #Starmer's alleged inactivity in regards reversing #Brexit is perfectly logical. It stems from the fact that he simply does not have the power to #rejoin the #EU or even the #SingleMarket and/or #CustomsUnion. Just think of unfurling Brexit as a dead parrot, if that helps.
@JackTheCat Starmer needs to shed that Brexiteer persona and introduce policies towards Europe that the majority of the population desires. But I fear his estimation is accurate - those imagining rejoining EU core insttutions is just a matter of will are being as simplistic as those who thought #brexit would be simple and without cost
That is not to say we cannot improve our relationship with our own continent
There comes a time when you have to stop making empty promises and trying to square a circle and you have to deal with Reality.
