Germany urges Britain to rejoin the EU customs union.

Germany’s top diplomat in London has called on Britain to strike a customs union deal with the European Union.

Speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce on Thursday morning, ambassador Miguel Berger pointed to Turkey’s long-standing customs union with the EU as a potential model.

"The government is obsessed with finding any levers it can that might generate growth."

Except for that thing which will actually take the brake off trade with our largest market.

If a government with a huge majority is too frit to take "tough decisions" that don't involve kicking not-well-off people when they're down you have to wonder what it's for.

the Guardian · UK politics: ‘It’s not a customs union’: No 10 leaves door open to joining pan-Europe scheme – as it happenedDowning Street says EU’s suggestion of UK joining agreement would not cross its ‘red lines’ for closer ties

These are generous offers from the EU.

If Starmer were, as he claims to be, laser-focused on growing the UK economy, he would start serious talks with the EU about them.

If, on the other hand, he remains ideologically wedded to a hard Brexit at all costs, then he won't.

I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Probably depends on what his sponsors think. You don't expect him to buy his own Taylor Swift concert tickets, do you?

Maros Sefcovic addressing colleagues at a European Summit.
BBC NewsEU trade chief: Bloc may consider UK joining pan-Europe customs schemeThe UK re-joining the Pan-Euro-Mediterranean Convention is up for discussion in reset talks, says Maros Sefcovic.

#Starmer says he doesn’t think the UK will re-join EU #singleMarket or #customsUnion within his lifetime

At 61, healthy and wealthy, he is likely to live at least another 20 years, probably longer

But I fear his estimation is accurate - those imagining rejoining EU core insttutions is just a matter of will are being as simplistic as those who thought #brexit would be simple and without cost

That is not to say we cannot improve our relationship with our own continent
