French city of Nice backtracks on big cruise ship ban.

The mayor of Nice on Friday backtracked on plans to ban big cruise ships from the French Riviera town to prevent overtourism.

The original plan was lauded by environmentalists but caused dismay among local businesses owners and the cruise industry.

For this is Hikawa Maru in Yokohama, 2018. Launched in 1929, she was originally an ocean liner carrying 331 passengers, becoming a hospital ship in World War II, then a cargo ship and back to cruising post-war. In 1961 she was permanently berthed and turned into a hotel, restaurant, and museum ship.

Posted some pro-Ukraine stuff to Instagram as part of Operation See Who Gives A Shit In The Travel Community there. A fishing exercise. With a lot of cruise people, certainly where Americans are concerned, Republicans outweigh rational, empathic humans, but it is nice to occasionally find those who are as appalled by everything as the rest of us, even if it's not great reading. I've omitted my comment as it's not relevant.

You might not want to get
#sick while on a #cruise, or you may end up like #MikeCameron from Braham, Minnesota:

Mike Cameron, a man from Braham, Minnesota, won a free cruise with
#NorwegianCruiseLines but ended up with a $47,000 #medical #bill after falling ill with the #flu onboard[1][5].

Key details of the story:

1. Mike Cameron and his girlfriend Tamra Masterman won a free week-long Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian Cruise Line Encore.

2. The cruise departed from Miami on January 5, 2025[1][5].

3. During the trip, Cameron contracted the flu and required medical treatment in the ship's medical center[1].

4. He spent four days in the medical ward, receiving oxygen, catheter placement, IV medications, and X-rays[8].

5. The couple had purchased travel insurance from Norwegian Cruise Line that covered medical expenses up to $20,000[1].

6. Despite having insurance, they were charged $47,000 for the medical treatment[1][5].

7. The cruise line maxed out two of their credit cards on file, leaving them with a remaining balance of $21,000[1].

8. Norwegian Cruise Line stated that their pricing was "closely comparable to other cruise lines and is what we believe to be fair and reasonable"[1][5].

This story has been covered by various news outlets, including FOX 9, The Independent, CBS News, and others, since late January 2025[1][5][9].

Fifth norovirus outbreak hits Holland American ships since December

upi.com/Health_News/2025/02/26

Eighty-eight people aboard a Holland America cruise ship, the Eurodam, in the Caribbean were sickened in a norovirus outbreak -- the fifth striking the line since early December.

The breakdown was 79 of the 2,057 guests and nine of the 834 crew members, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. This represented about 3% of those onboard.

For here's the serene Baltic Sea as seen from our aft cabin on the approach to Estonia back in 2017. Seagulls flew in our wake to see what our ship was bringing to the surface but we were cruising so slowly I doubt anything was disturbed at all.

Gamle Stavanger is the old town part of the city of Stavanger, the last port of call on our 2013 cruise aboard Crown Princess to the Norwegian fjords. We'd spent the day here on an excursion initially to an iron age farm, an old telecoms tower, and the city's cathedral, but with free time at the end and our ship safely close by and in sight we went for a walk around this picturesque spot before boarding for the last time.

This was the former slum area of the city and during modernisation in the 1950s it was almost all torn down to make way for new buildings but the city architect saw its potential and ordered a clean-up instead. So nice was this area that we returned to it ten years later for more of a look and to visit museums nearby.
