There are two lessons here:

(1) Always wear your seatbelt when traveling by air, even when the seatbelt sign is off.

(2) When in crisis communication mode - don't deflect or corporate-speak. Just handle the matter with clarity and compassion, put customers first, and communicate early and often. It says a lot about the state of corporate #PR that this example is lauded as a rarity.

The current Rackspace FAQ on their security incident might be in the top 5 of the worst crisis communications ever. This is a great example of how you blow any latent trust your customers might have.

Here’s a thing that sucks about losing #Twitter. Yes, it has been a mess for a while but in my region-not quite a #news desert, but let’s say, news arid- #CrisisCommunication is a mess. When #wildfire burned down 1000s of homes and threatened whole towns in 2020, many turned to Twitter and FB for drips of eyewitness reportage and relayed evacuation notices. It was a cluster-f and left so many people out. But for those who had it, mass social was immediate, a lot of people were online together.

With so many computer engineers - and people with related skills - joining the Mastodon servers, I am hoping that someone can develop an interface or app that allows media services and government to communicate across servers in the event of an emergency or crisis. Is this doable?
