Today we celebrate the Crimean Tatar Flag Day 🩵💛

The Tarak-Tamga is the ancestral emblem of Giray dynasty, the only rulers of the Crimean Khanate since the 15th century, and a symbol of #CrimeanTatar people, while the blue color has a deep meaning and history among Turkic peoples.

This flag was used as the national flag since the time of the Crimean Democratic Republic in 1917, but during the Soviet occupation, it was banned.

After the return from deportation in 1991, the Second Kurultai of the Crimean Tatar people reinstated the flag as the national symbol.

Since 2014, this flag has been a symbol of resistance to occupation. Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, it has been proudly worn on the chevrons of soldiers fighting for Ukraine's independence and the future deoccupation of #Crimea

Russia has labeled #CrimeanTatar journalist and human rights defender Lutfiye Zudiyeva a “foreign agent” — it is a common tool used to repress disloyal people in russia and on occupied territories.

This is yet another step in russia’s ongoing persecution of Crimea’s Indigenous Crimean Tatar people. As long as #Crimea remains under
russian occupation, it won’t stop — it will only get worse.

Another #CrimeanTatar has died defending Ukraine. Zinur Ametka voluntarily joined the military while still a student and served in the AZOV Brigade. He was only 21 years old.

Remember those who fight for their home — Ukraine and Crimea. For them, nothing is more valuable than dignity and freedom.

Yesterday, on the day of Oraza Bayram, at the #FreeAzov rally I held a sign that read "We are waiting for them" in Crimean Tatar and English. It was dedicated to Ernest Baranov, a #CrimeanTatar soldier from the 503rd Marine Battalion. He has been missing for nearly three years, but his parents still believe he is in captivity.

Many #CrimeanTatars have been fighting in Ukraine’s Armed Forces since the war began in 2014, and many more joined in 2022. For safety reasons we don’t know all their names, but that doesn’t stop us from believing with all our hearts in their return and praying for their lives. We are waiting for our defenders, and we remember our heroes — both those who are still with us and those who have fallen.

Another of Kandel's #78rpm #klezmer repertoire that is somewhat unique. Aside from the opening prelude, the melody is a well known #CrimeanTatar folk dance Qaytarma (also recorded by other klezmers, such as Naftule Brandwein), somewhat klezmerized into a 3/8 hora pattern instead of Tatar 9/8 or 7/8 for this dance. The title "A Turkish Wedding" is pure orientalism😅

80 years ago, one of the worst crimes against the Crimean Tatar people was committed – their mass deportation by the Soviet authorities. The exact number of victims is still unknown, but at least a third of the population perished. The perpetrators were never punished, but now it's our duty to respond to Russia's actions by defending Ukraine and seeking justice for all the crimes committed since 2014. #CrimeanTatar #RussiaOccupation
