And here's Crumlin Valley, just outside Cornamóna (Corr na Móna, "pointed hill of the bog"). In the distance to the left is Corcóg, in the Maamturk mountains, which I went up a few weeks ago
Along one marshy stretch we saw some gorgeous Round-leaved Sundew (Drúchtín Móna), one of Ireland's 10 native carnivorous plant species

Mount Gable (Binn Shléibhe) from the west, on a walk to Crumlin Valley in Connemara yesterday. That's Lough Corrib to the right. Lovely day for a hike

This is a 12km loop cycle with all but 600m on local roads in #Connemara about 4km from #Clifden where you could rent bikes - the YouTube of the route ends with the route from Clifden. Or park at the Marconi loop walk across the road from the loop end
I added the short if hilly dead ends to the two harbor’s and small settlement at the ends of the peninsula - otherwise the only ascent is that up to Alcock & Brown

Continuing my cycling trip around #Connemara, this is the ‘road’ that runs above #Roundstone on the side of Errisbeg and a useful warning to be careful about following Google maps
A lot of the Atlantic coast is fantastic for cycling in particular before the main tourist season starts in the summer when the roads are quiet. I’ve guides to several possible routes (and will be adding todays) at

In 2008 her sister, Naisrín, also a sean-nós singer, and her mother were detained for a time in Gaza after slipping across the border from Egypt while carrying money collected in Ireland for Palestinian families. An Phailistín is a song in both Irish and Arabic decrying the fate of the Palestinians. 2/2
Róisín Elsafty (born in Connemara) is an Irish-Egyptian singer in the sean-nós tradition. She is a native speaker of Irish and and fluent in Arabic. The family were a multi-religious household, celebrating both Christmas and Eid ul-Fitr. 1/2
Came across this fox statue somewhere along the coast of Connemara. The second photo shows the Inscription at the foot of the statue, which I believe explains the origin of the word "shenanigans".
Staying in Connemara with friends for the St. Patrick's celebrations, and they took us out to St. Patrick's chapel at Mám Eán (pass of the birds). Although we'd driven through Connemara a couple of times, we'd never walked here. The walk itself wasn't particularly difficult, but you get to see some of the summits of the Maum Turk range, with their glacial sculpting from previous ice ages forming precipitous ridges and deep cwms. The weather wasn't too bad either, it didn't rain, and the wind was only biting at the pass. After lunch in a pub in Maam, we headed over to the fjord in Killary, with views out towards the mouth and the sea.

An OK film, led me to a really enjoyable Kindle book, then the audio with a superb narrator.
A tale beyond the pale, connecting ancient past to present, a dark mystery found on a lonely road winding through western #Ireland to a #Connemara forest impossible to find on any map.

There's a story I love, probably apocryphal, about a Connemara woman who was asked if she believed in fairies.
"I don't," she said. "But they're there anyway."
