Will be part of a discussion panel on global crises and doom scenarios at Tec Art, Rotterdam, today (Saturday), 20.30

"Society has a curious tendency to fixate on annoying daily struggles, while the dread of larger, more urgent crises fades into the background noise of our lives. How else can we explain why, even in the face of extreme crises, nothing seems to actually change? Is it because Doomsday simply isn’t as bad as Monday?"

with Süeda Isik, Florian Cramer, Sophia Bulgakova, Ronald Hünneman, Cecile van Bruggen (moderator), at Katoenhuis Rotterdam, Keilestraat 9c, 3029 BP Rotterdam, 20.30-21.45, 29th March 2025

Two fresh news times about the world going to sh*t:

- Investor buys up former German Third Reich, prisoner-built concentration camp tunnel system in order to develop it into post-apocalypse survival bunkers for the rich

- Larger-than-life sculpture of Elon Musk is towed on a Tesla Cybertruck through Texas as a sales stunt for an NFT

""Dealing with large-scale threats demands considerable societal cohesion." As an example, he cites the Covid pandemic. Societies that showed higher levels of cohesion and the capacity for collective action before Covid broke out navigated the pandemic more effectively and successfully implemented the necessary distancing measures."

No glimmer of hope is left after having read this well-documented and seemingly weel-informed paper (doi.org/10.3390/world4030032)on a predictable "major population correction" triggered by our negative output on our ecosystem. Maybe other scientists have divergent opinions, or could this paper make a consensus on what is going to happen to us all? #collapsology

MDPIThe Human Ecology of Overshoot: Why a Major ‘Population Correction’ Is InevitableHomo sapiens has evolved to reproduce exponentially, expand geographically, and consume all available resources. For most of humanity’s evolutionary history, such expansionist tendencies have been countered by negative feedback. However, the scientific revolution and the use of fossil fuels reduced many forms of negative feedback, enabling us to realize our full potential for exponential growth. This natural capacity is being reinforced by growth-oriented neoliberal economics—nurture complements nature. Problem: the human enterprise is a ‘dissipative structure’ and sub-system of the ecosphere—it can grow and maintain itself only by consuming and dissipating available energy and resources extracted from its host system, the ecosphere, and discharging waste back into its host. The population increase from one to eight billion, and >100-fold expansion of real GWP in just two centuries on a finite planet, has thus propelled modern techno-industrial society into a state of advanced overshoot. We are consuming and polluting the biophysical basis of our own existence. Climate change is the best-known symptom of overshoot, but mainstream ‘solutions’ will actually accelerate climate disruption and worsen overshoot. Humanity is exhibiting the characteristic dynamics of a one-off population boom–bust cycle. The global economy will inevitably contract and humanity will suffer a major population ‘correction’ in this century.

#Collapsology is a thing.
