Set during the <a href="https://cinematheque.social/tags/AmericanCivilWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AmericanCivilWar</span></a>, it's a comedic retelling of a popular war memoir about the <a href="https://cinematheque.social/tags/GreatLocomotiveChase" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GreatLocomotiveChase</span></a>.</p><p>Sadly it was a box office <a href="https://cinematheque.social/tags/flop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flop</span></a>, resulting in Keaton losing his independence and The General entering the <a href="https://cinematheque.social/tags/PublicDomain" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PublicDomain</span></a> as early as 1954.
