He’d been living in Canada his entire adult life, and with his Canadian wife, Sophia Papp, since 2023.</p><p>Sophia has been given the devastating choice to remain in Canada without her spouse or relocate to <a href="https://beige.party/tags/Pakistan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Pakistan</span></a> , where she doesn’t speak the language and faces significant barriers to her health and wellbeing.</p><p>A mere 48 hours before Zain was deported, he and Sophia’s Spousal Sponsorship application was rejected by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) without substantive explanation.</p><p>The couple’s lawyer, Randall Cohn, has stated that this eleventh-hour rejection is likely illegal. A judge subsequently sentenced him to 9.5 years, which includes a firearm enhancement. Martinez will serve a minimum of four years as a result of his plea to a serious violent offense.</p><p>"The state agreed to dismiss a possible hate crime enhancement as a part of the plea deal.</p><p>"The court scheduled jury selection to begin Monday for Martinez’s trial. Prosecutors accused him of shooting and wounding Jacob Johns at a protest last September in Española.</p><p>"One group was celebrating the postponement of the rededication of the Oñate statue. A smaller group stood by, arguing that officials were ignoring their culture and history. For the most part, they stayed separate, until one individual jumped a wall and ran toward the protesters.</p><p>"Video showed the Oñate protesters trying to tackle the man as he ran toward the group. The video showed protesters ripping off his 'Make America Great Again' hat as he jumped back over the wall. Then, the video showed that man firing one shot that hit a protester.</p><p>"Medics arrived about 10 minutes later and took the shooting victim to the hospital. </p><p>"Witnesses said the man drove away in a white Tesla. They identified him as 23-year-old Ryan Martinez. They also described him as a known online troll who often riled up crowds at protests. It’s evident everywhere, from the U.K. recently reporting its second worst <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/harvest" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>harvest</span></a> on record to <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Antarctica" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Antarctica</span></a> turning green to the U.S. spending $150 billion a year on climate change-related <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ExtremeWeather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeWeather</span></a> events.</p><p>"But this isn’t some mysterious crisis. We know <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/FossilFuel" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>FossilFuel</span></a> companies are responsible for the emissions heating the globe. But instead of fixing it, these corporations have lied to the public, bribed politicians and sowed distrust in science. Meanwhile, governments are giving more money than ever to fossil fuel companies via subsidies, with a record $7 trillion cashed out to <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BigOil" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BigOil</span></a> in 2022.</p><p>"Some climate activist groups would like to bring your attention to this issue. But they are often arrested and get the book thrown at them when they demonstrate. Climate activist Roger Hallam knows this all too well, as he serves a five-year prison sentence for <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/BlockingTraffic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BlockingTraffic</span></a> — and, as he explained to Salon, his plight is a warning to Americans who vote for politicians that deny climate science.</p><p>"Hallam, who described himself as a <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/PoliticalPrisoner" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PoliticalPrisoner</span></a>, was incarcerated for his role in leading and participating in an anti-climate change demonstration in November 2022. All are appealing.</p><p>"The sentences are believed to be the longest in the UK’s history for <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/nonviolent" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nonviolent</span></a> protest and were delivered under two new controversial laws that supercharged <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/policing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>policing</span></a> powers to crack down on disruptive protests, even when they are peaceful.</p><p>"They place the act of planning a 'public nuisance' event, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, on a similar footing as <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ViolentCrimes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ViolentCrimes</span></a> like robbery, for which punishments range from community service to 12 years’ jail, or rape, which is four to 19 years.</p><p>"The judge — who in court referred to the activists as '<a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/extremists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>extremists</span></a>' — justified the long jail terms because all five activists had previously been convicted of one or more offenses in relation to direct action protest. "Amid her calls for governments to act on climate change, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has spoken openly about her Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. She is not the only environmental campaigner to speak about being neurodivergent (having a neurological condition or disability) – something Thunberg describes as her 'superpower'.

"In the UK, naturalists #ChrisPackham and #DaraMcAnulty have both discussed their autism. Packham has said that it has been 'enormously beneficial' to his career.

"In my doctoral research, I interviewed 23 youth activists, conservation workers and environmentalists to examine the link between nature experiences and mental health in an era of climate breakdown. My findings shed light on the motivations and intentions of neurodivergent people who work in the environmental and conservation sector, as well as those who are drawn to climate activism.

"Many of my participants had been diagnosed with mental health, psychiatric and neurological conditions including autism, #ADHD and #bipolar disorder. They reported finding community and a sense of purpose in the #environmental #activism movement and through a connection with #nature."
