Ancient mystery solved!

Back in the mid 90s, Paul Gambaccini hosted the Classic FM chart show. Had a lovely piece of stirring music behind the final countdown, just before he confirmed Gorecki III was still number one.

It's the "Homage march", written as incidental music from Edvard Grieg's "Sigurd Jorsalfar".

Next question: why does Henry Kelly aspirate the H in Beethoven?

Fireworks have started early here. 😡

It’s worth mentioning for UK pet owners Classic FM’s Pet Classics will be on Saturday November 2nd starting at 5 pm with Charlotte Hawkins and on Tuesday 5th November at 5 pm with Dan Walker.

My dog doesn’t like fireworks (and we have to suffer weeks of them going off here) but playing pet classics helps to keep him more relaxed.

Classic FMClassic FM’s Pet Classics returns in 2024 to relax pets during the fireworksDan Walker and Charlotte Hawkins will host two programmes filled with soothing classical music and practical advice from the RSPCA, to calm pets during fireworks season.

It has been at least 2 years in this journey to fall into a routine that suits me and my life style as well as benefit those around me. Looking back, it is disheartening and i can not judge anyone that falls into simple habits that might make you feel overwhelmed and worthless, but there is just so much thrown into your face that it becomes hard to avoid it.

Don't know if it's audio compression, or just a different recording.

In the Apollo 13 Soundtrack, there's a repeated theme with flowing strings and a distinct plucked bass note. Now, I have a CD recording of the track "All Systems Go / The Launch" on a #ClassicFM at the Movies album. On that recording, the bass note is almost subliminally deep. It's audible, but almost as a feeling than a sound.

Alternatively, the version of this track on YouTube (and currently playing on StreamingSoundtracks) has a much more audible, "twangy" bass note. It's more like a bass guitar than an organ.

As I say, I can't tell if the difference is that the YouTube algorithm has compressed the sound, or if it is actually a real difference due to a different recording, but my point (I'd get there eventually) is that I prefer the CD version. The "newer" version makes the bass note too noticeable for my taste.

I grew up in a house in West Lothian where my parents loved Kathleen Ferrier and, even as a youngster, I could tell this was a woman with an extraordinary voice, somebody who could bring tears to a glass eye, whether singing folk songs or classical music. Kathleen died 70 years ago this weekend on October 8 1953, aged just 41, but we have the records to remember her by. #KathleenFerrier #Blackburn #EdinburghFestival #RobertBurns #OrfeoandEurydice #ClassicFM
