Vanalope
Huzzah! Caught in the act! Heard some egg song as I was pulling weeds, glanced over to see 5 chickens in the run. Hurried over to the coop and opened it up to see Medusa, standing up from having just laid a speckled egg with big splotches. So it's either her or she's just started laying eggs of that type too. Will have to see how the rest of the morning shakes out. She's the first to lay today.

#chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
Got another egg with large speckles today. Once again the chicken who laid it was in and out of the coop without me seeing them. Alecto is laying the nice pretty much uniform dark brown eggs, Tisiphone is lightly lighter brown with contrasting small speckles. Then there's this large speckles layer, will she lay tomorrow? Will I finally ID her? Will one of the other 3 start laying making things even more complicated? Everyday is something new.

Have a lot of garden bed weeding to do tomorrow so hopefully can keep a close eye on who's going in and out and check in between.

#chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
Well holy crap. I let the dogs out and was all, "I'll go ahead and check the coop again" And there was another egg! High contrast speckles like the one Tisiphone laid!

They're doing a good job of making up for bumming me out yesterday!

#chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
And someone else laid while I was inside making macrons. Didn't see who went inside, they were stealthy, no egg song. Even though I was inside occupied w cooking I had the window open specifically so I wouldn't miss egg song if someone laid.

Dunno if this was laid by the mystery chicken that laid on the poop board yesterday or if one of the 3 who hasn't laid suddenly started. Theoretically it could have been Alecto, this egg is about the same color and just a tad larger than what she laid yesterday but so far Alecto had been very loud and proud with her egg song when she lays (can hear her even w windows closed) Also Alecto has laid 3 days in a row now, that's a lot for her breed, am expecting her to take today off.

Interesting that Tisiphone and whoever laid this egg were silent about it. Two eggs and there's been no egg song today.

#chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
So Tisiphone, the chicken that ate her egg yesterday just laid another and walked away like a good girl!

So relieved! Not counting the battle won but it's looking less dire than yesterday.

I immediately did two things yesterday, threw some wheat berries into their oystershell treat cup as they watched me do it. (They LOVE wheat berries) This prompted them to all immediately bury their faces in that calcium treat cup. So for sure they ALL know what's in there now.

I also hung a curtain in front of the nest box they've been laying in and the one right next to it. Hoping we have the problem beat but will have to wait and see. The solid decoy eggs should be here tomorrow so I'll put one in each of those nest boxes.

Here's Tisiphone's egg. Much lighter base than Alecto's with bigger dark contrasting speckles. Will see if that evens out over time. Interestingly even though this is only her second egg, it's already about as big as what Alecto is laying. 1.5 oz already.

#chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
Well shit. Good news/bad news. Two of our other chickens have started to lay.

When I opened the coop early this morning to clean it out, I discovered the interior remains of an egg on the poop catch board under their night roosts. So someone laid an egg there really late yesterday or early this morning but someone ate it. Not a scrap of shell left. This seems to imply someone isn't getting enough calcium. This shouldn't be as I give them layer pellets and they have a treat cup full of crushed oyster shell supplement to give them a constant supply of calcium.

Later in the morning, I heard egg song and looked in the coop to see Tisiphone in a nest box. So I let her be and 30 min later when I saw her come out, checked the box. Again, only interior remnants of an egg. For sure it was Tisiphone that ate her own egg, no one else went into the coop in those 30 min.

So there's some things I can try to nip this behavior in the bud. Gonna get them an even higher % protein diet than they are already getting (though current diet should be sufficient).

Will put some extra treats in the oyster shell cup and make sure I see all of them have eaten from there. I dunno, maybe Tisiphone hasn't noticed they oyster shell treat cup yet and isnt getting enough Calcium?

Also have solid decoy eggs on the way and will try hanging curtains over the entrance of the egg boxes. All things that can help correct egg eating behavior.

Can also try blowing out an egg and fill it with something they don't like to try negative reinforcement of the behavior. I really hope I don't have to fall to the last resort, get rid of any egg eaters, if that means all of them, start over.

Am so frigging bummed am having to deal with this.

Alecto laid again a bit later in the am,and that good girl didn't eat her egg. I was able to get to it before anyone else.

#Chickens #ChickensofMastodon

Ari "Two Naps" Jackson
Lookit this chonker! Not mine -- a client's.

We were trying to figure out if it's a rooster though. It has faster comb and wattle growth than its siblings.

It was supposed to be a hen; but it hasn't started crowing or active aggressively toward its siblings. My recc was wait and see if it does either before making any decisions about how/where to rehome.

#ChickensOfMastodon #FediverseChook

Vanalope
So Alecto has now laid her 6th egg. It was definitely larger than the 1st, 1.6 oz vs 1.3 and you can visually see it's a bit bigger. This is expected as young chickens (pullets) lay smaller eggs when they first start that get bigger as they mature.

What I didn't expect is Alecto's eggs to get darker. Everything I've read about Marans hens says their 1st egg of the season is the darkest and they gradually get a little lighter over the course of the lay season. After winter and the rest season, again the 1st egg will be the darkest that hen will lay for the season.

I guess it's a little different for pullets since they're not fully mature when they start laying, cause Alectos eggs have gotten a little darker over the course of the week.

Hers a pic of 1st vs 6th. They're all about to be used now though cause I'm gonna make ice cream and macrons out of them.

The other girls still haven't started yet. They're all showing submissive squat signs now so one of these days suddenly they're all gonna start announcing their eggs w egg song.

#Chickens #ChickensofMastodon #Homesteading

Vanalope
Well well, I wasn't expecting another egg from Alecto til tomorrow but she just laid another! Guess she's literally getting her rear in gear!

Still nada from her slacker sisters though. Mebbe tomorrow!

#Chickens #ChickensofMastodon #Homesteading

Vanalope
Alecto laid her second egg a bit ago. Was dragging stuff out to work on mounting feeder tubes in the run when I saw her go into the coop and start scratching around. Figured an egg was incoming so put off disturbing them w my construction activities until I saw her come out, then checked the nest box. Sure enough, there it was. Consistent in size and color to the 1st, about half the size of store-bought large size eggs and a nice deep brown. Not the darkest brown that a Marans can produce but still a decent dark brown.

She laid it this time during mid morning like a normal chicken and not a weirdo in the late afternoon like she did the other day. 😆 Looks like she's on track to be an every other day layer which is normal for her breed.

Still waiting on the others to start. Should be anytime if they lag behind Alecto on this milestone as they have the others. Will be interesting to see the range of dark brown the others produce.

#Chickens #ChickensofMastodon #Homesteading

Vanalope
Got the roof on the run area of the chicken coop this morning. So happy to have this last big task done!

Working on mounting their feeder tubes and run roosts today. Tomorrow will work on the trim on the exterior of the solid walls.

The girls are now well protected from getting blasted by afternoon sun, wind, rain and come this winter, snow. We made the south and eastern facing sides of the run solid instead of screen because we get some brutal wind from those directions in the early spring and winter. Am working on growing some windbreak hedges on the edges of our property but that will take time.

#ChickensofMastodon #Chickens #Homesteading

Vanalope
Well holy shit. Forget days, try minutes. Shortly after posting this I went back out to clean the coop run area, saw Alecto was back out with the others so decided to check the nest box she was in.

Our first egg! Kinda small but w the stress of them moving into the new coop and it's been pretty hot, can't blame her for having her 1st egg on the smallish side. Wasn't expecting a late in the day lay. She's always been a couple of days ahead of the others on development milestones so I bet the others will start laying by the end of the week.

Just crossed eggs off the grocery list!

#ChickensofMastodon

Vanalope
Super excited. The chickens have been in their new coop a few weeks now, and though we still need to get the roof on the run area (hopefully in the next couple days am awaiting the delivery of a metal shearing tool to be able to cut the last roof panel.)

The coop's been done enough for them to live in it full time. They seem to have adjusted to the new change.

A couple days ago they started going up into the main coop during the day and scratching nearly all the bedding out of the nest boxes into the main floor of the coop. Their combs and wattles have also been getting redder. Today Alecto, the hen who's always been the most physically advanced of the lot, was in the coop scratching in the nest box when I checked the main coop. I tentatively scratched her butt and instead of moving away, she squatted down, raised her butt and held her wings out....the submissive squat, showing a chicken is ready to mate. So eggs should be forthcoming very very soon!

I quickly left her alone to work through doing what she needs to do.

#ChickensOfMastodon #chickens #homesteading

~meoralis~I haven't shared a #chicken update in a while! Here are the young ones, Cleo and Jette, doing a sphinx impression on top of our chicken playground on a rainy day 🤭

The four of them are now living as a group. The leader, Henna, is sort of a benevolent autocrat who leaves the little ones alone and doesn't mind them coming close. But her second, Stella, is still power-drunk and keeps bullying the underlings when they dare go near the food and snacks. Well. I guess it will stay that way until the little ones are grown up and fight back. 🤷 In the evenings, Cleo and Jette go inside the shelter themselves now, so we have established a new normal where I only have to check occasionally. Soon, we can get rid of the portable fence and build a prettier enclosure. 💅

#chickens #hen #hens #Huhn #Hühner #Lachshuhn #bird #birds #birdPhotography #birdsOfMastodon #ChickensOfMastodon #BackyardChickens #ChickensOfPixelFed #Faverolles
