Ari "Two Naps" Jackson<p>Random chicken update:</p><p>We had our first light freeze last night, as evidenced by the outdoor water bowl crusting over with ice. Not a hard freeze, and daytime temps are not awful yet (high 40s F). </p><p>I've got a replacement heater panel and heated perch arriving tomorrow, as the 3-year old flat panel kicked the bucket and the not-even-a-year-old perch did as well. </p><p>Just in time! They are pretty vulnerable when they are molting. They also don't lay eggs when they're growing new feathers, and I never force them to lay in the winter with artificial lighting.</p><p>Most of my birds are still in or are just starting the process of molting. One has finished, but isn't back to full strength yet. She's always been a little bit of a sickly bird, so I keep an eye on her. </p><p>Cleaning out the coop each morning, it looks like Wile E. Coyote has been in there chasing them in their sleep because there are discarded chicken feathers all over. I don't know why they seem to drop most of their feathers when they're sleeping.</p><p>Over the summer I put away about six dozen eggs using the water glass technique. I have not yet tried any of said eggs to see if they survived the calcification process. Supposedly, they come out just as fresh as the day they were laid. Ari Auntiefa 🏳️‍🌈🌞♾️<p>I should start a photo series: Random Eggs in Places They Shouldn’t Be. </p><p>I gathered this one right before bed as I was putting the girls up for the night. </p><p>Didn’t bother to take it to the kitchen. </p><p>Instead, I took my watch and bracelets off and made a nest for it on the bedside table.</p><p>This table was at my dad’s bedside for 27 years.
