There has been lots said about 2024 being a poor year for pumpkins and squash in the UK. It has also been notable for: squirrels ring barking sycamore trees, causing a lot of crown death; tiny walnuts; tiny chestnuts. Chestnuts are 25mm max; green walnuts 40mm. Unlikely to have formed a kernel. I have germinated walnuts three years of the last six and chestnuts last year. I got some Asian food goodies from my friend's rural backyard. She grows all of these on her 1.5 acres property that backs onto a forested park.
Japanese chestnuts - these were boil cooked.
Taro & Ube (purple yam - these were steam cooked.

THE CHESTNUT MOON
Chestnuts are typically a symbol of October's moon (lunar calendar=13th day/9th month), often referred to as 'kurimeigetsu' (栗名月 the 'chestnut harvest moon').
As we can't wait for the next full moon, we're enjoying some chestnut delights for the equinox.
What did the Romans ever do for us? Plant sweet chestnut trees all over Europe, for one. They did so because chestnuts were an important part of their diet. They ground them into flour or coarse meal to make Bread, and Roman soldiers were fed a type of Porridge made from chestnuts before heading into battle.
